In n8n, retrieve YouTube transcript text with an authorized caption API workflow, a community template, or a transcript service or node; then pass the text to an AI Agent as prompt input or a tool result. These routes have different credentials and reliability: YouTube’s documented caption listing and download methods require OAuth 2.0, while community extraction methods may need maintenance and do not work for every video.
Choose a transcript retrieval route
Start with a video URL supplied by a manual trigger, webhook, schedule, playlist or channel collector, or an earlier workflow node. Then choose the method that fits your access, setup, and maintenance requirements.

The official API guide states: “Your request must be authorized using OAuth 2.0.” That applies to its documented caption listing and download requests; it does not mean every video has a downloadable caption track.

Build the workflow around a dependable output
Whatever retrieval route you use, normalize each result before sending it to the Agent. Keep the original URL and video ID alongside transcript text so that a failed item can be traced, retried, or checked against its source.

- Transcript: retain the returned text, and optionally create a cleaned text field for downstream prompts.
- Metadata: preserve video ID, language, and timestamps when the retrieval method provides them.
- Status: record success or error for each video, rather than treating an empty transcript as a valid result.
- Volume: for long transcripts, decide whether the task needs the complete text or selected chunks. Do not assume a fixed Agent context limit; it depends on the model and configuration you use.
A community node README describes a simplified result shaped like {"video_id":"...","language":"...","transcript":"..."}, with per-item success and error information. That shape is convenient for an LLM, but confirm the current package and output fields before building expressions that depend on them.
Send transcript text to an AI Agent
Pass a prepared transcript as prompt input
Use this pattern when another node has already retrieved the transcript and you want the Agent to analyze it. Map the transcript field into the Agent’s prompt, along with the task and a clear output format. For example, ask it to return a concise summary, key points, and open questions as JSON. Treat the prompt below as an adaptable example, not a guarantee that every Agent node has identical field labels:

Let the Agent retrieve a transcript as a tool
Use a transcript-capable node connected to the AI Agent’s tool input when the Agent should choose which supplied URL to retrieve during its work. The documented community-node README describes this connection pattern. This differs from prepared prompt input: the Agent invokes the retrieval tool, so define when it should call the tool and what it should do when retrieval fails.

Handle missing captions and workflow failures
No retrieval route is guaranteed to work for every video. A video may have no accessible caption track, a transcript provider may return an error, or an unofficial extraction method may stop working when YouTube changes page behavior.
- Check the per-video result for an error or empty transcript before running the Agent.
- Route failed items to a retry or review branch, retaining the original URL and video ID.
- Keep bulk processing item-specific so one failure cannot silently become another video’s input.
- Validate the Agent’s output against the requested schema before storing it or passing it to another action.
An n8n example shows a broader pattern: collect transcripts and metadata, store them, pass unprocessed transcript text to a Gemini AI Agent, and filter generated content for human review before publishing. Its specific credentials and nodes may change, but the separation between retrieval, storage, AI processing, and approval is useful when adapting a workflow. See n8n workflow examples.

Keep generated content verifiable
An Agent’s summary or extraction is an interpretation of the transcript, not independent confirmation of what happened in the video. Preserve the source video URL and, where available, timestamps so a reviewer can check quotes, decisions, and factual claims against the original. Retrieval does not itself grant permission to republish the transcript or AI-generated derivatives; follow current platform terms and applicable rights.
