Limited narrows the topics the teen can discuss with Meta AI; WhatsApp does not describe it as turning Meta AI off or removing it.
Change the Meta AI setting on the teen’s phone
- Open WhatsApp on the teen’s phone and go to Settings > Parental controls.
- Enter the parent PIN.
- Tap Meta AI, then choose Limited.
WhatsApp documents two choices: Standard and Limited. Standard is the default and supports topics generally aligned with content ratings for users 13 and older. Limited further restricts the topics available for discussion. WhatsApp does not publish a detailed list of which topics are excluded, so do not assume a particular category is blocked. With Limited selected, Meta AI features that use Private Processing are unavailable. The setting restricts the experience rather than removing Meta AI entirely.
Set up parental controls if they are not linked yet
WhatsApp’s optional teen controls are for teens aged 13–17 and a parent or guardian aged 18 or older. Both people must agree to link their accounts. WhatsApp says the minimum age to use its service can be higher than 13 in some countries or regions; check its age-verification information for context.

Use the latest WhatsApp version for iPhone or Android. Setup takes place on the teen’s phone, with the parent’s account used to link and verify the relationship:
- On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Parental controls > Continue.
- Confirm the teen’s birthday and age, then continue to link a parent account.
- Have the parent scan the QR code displayed on the teen’s phone and verify that they are an adult.
- Create a six-digit parent PIN, then enter it on the teen’s phone and review the available settings.
- Once linking is complete, follow the Meta AI steps above to select Limited.
The PIN protects access to the supported parental settings, including changes to the Meta AI choice. WhatsApp’s full teen parental-control setup instructions cover the linking process.

What parents can manage—and what they cannot read
These optional controls let a parent manage certain privacy settings, receive notifications about some activity, and manage selected experiences such as Meta AI, Channels, and Status. They do not give a parent access to read the teen’s personal chats or listen to calls. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted: “No one outside of the chat, not even the parent or WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share them.” Read WhatsApp’s overview of parental controls for teens for its explanation.
A parent can manage supported privacy settings on the teen’s phone through Settings > Parental controls and the parent PIN. Teens can see and adjust their privacy settings at Settings > Privacy; WhatsApp says a change to a less restrictive option requires parent approval. If Parental controls or Meta AI is missing
WhatsApp says teen parental controls are rolling out gradually and may not yet be available in every region. It does not provide a region-by-region schedule or a guaranteed date for availability, so updating the app may not make the option appear immediately.
