ComboFix’s guide says it normally restores the clock settings it changes; if that restoration did not occur, repair Windows’ date, time, time zone, daylight-saving, and Windows Time settings manually.
First identify whether the error is a time-zone offset, an incorrect clock, a failed synchronization, or a hardware clock that loses time. Then follow the instructions for your Windows version.
Safety note: ComboFix is obsolete and should not be run casually. BleepingComputer lists version 19.11.4.1, last updated November 4, 2019, for Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8, and warns that unsupervised use can leave a computer unable to operate correctly (download information and warning). Its forum guidance says it is not compatible with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 (compatibility guidance). Do not download an unofficial modified copy or rerun it merely to fix the clock.
Identify what is wrong before changing settings
The symptom usually points to the right repair:
- Exactly one or several hours wrong: check the time zone and daylight-saving setting first. The UTC clock may be correct while Windows displays the wrong local time.
- Minutes or seconds wrong: Windows Time synchronization may have failed, the service may be disabled, or network time traffic may be blocked.
- The date becomes wrong after shutdown: a weak CMOS/RTC battery or an incorrect firmware clock is more likely than a ComboFix setting.
- The clock changes back after every restart: investigate Windows Time configuration, domain policy, dual-boot hardware-clock settings, malware persistence, and the motherboard battery.
- Only websites show certificate errors: an incorrect system date or time can make otherwise valid TLS certificates appear expired or not yet valid.
ComboFix’s documentation describes automatic restoration of clock settings as intended behavior, not a guarantee after an interrupted or failed run (ComboFix usage guide). A wrong clock by itself does not prove ComboFix caused the problem; the same symptom can come from a pre-existing error, damaged Windows Time configuration, malware, policy, dual-boot settings, or hardware.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: restore the clock in Settings
Menu wording can vary slightly by build, edition, and language. Microsoft’s current path is Start → Settings → Time & language → Date & time (Microsoft’s Date & time instructions).
- Check the displayed Time zone. If it is wrong, turn Set time zone automatically off and select the named zone that matches your location.
- If the clock itself is wrong, turn Set time automatically off. Select Change beside the manual date-and-time option, enter the correct date and time, and select Change.
- Turn Set time automatically back on.
- Turn Set time zone automatically back on only if Windows can reliably determine your location. Otherwise leave the correct zone selected manually.
- Select Sync now, if that control appears in your build, and confirm the clock and date after closing Settings.
Do not simply add or subtract an hour when the offset is caused by the time zone. Windows normally derives daylight-saving behavior from the selected zone. Where Windows shows Adjust for daylight saving time automatically, leave it enabled when appropriate for that zone and jurisdiction; daylight-saving rules differ by location and can change.
Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8: use Control Panel
These older systems use the classic date-and-time dialog. Labels differ slightly among releases.

- Right-click the notification-area clock and choose Adjust date/time or Adjust Date/Time.
- On the Date and Time tab, enter the correct date and time.
- Open Time Zone or Change time zone and select the correct regional zone.
- Confirm that the daylight-saving option is appropriate for that zone and date.
- On editions that provide it, open Internet Time, enable synchronization with an Internet time server, and select Update now or the equivalent control.
If the displayed time is off by a whole number of hours, correct the time zone before repeatedly editing the clock. Otherwise synchronization can keep producing the wrong local display.

Inspect the settings from an elevated Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator for commands that change the service or synchronization configuration. Microsoft documents these Windows Time tools and settings at Windows Time service tools and settings.
date /t
time /t
tzutil /g
w32tm /query /status
w32tm /query /source
w32tm /query /configurationtzutil /g displays the current Windows time-zone identifier. The w32tm queries show the service status, current source, and configured settings.

Correct the time zone with tzutil
- Display the current identifier:
tzutil /g - List the identifiers available on that Windows installation:
tzutil /l - Set the exact identifier that matches your location. For example:
tzutil /s "Eastern Standard Time"
The example is appropriate only where that Windows identifier matches the user’s location. Do not substitute ambiguous abbreviations such as “EST” or “PST”; Windows uses named identifiers and the correct choice depends on regional daylight-saving rules.
Force Windows to synchronize
After correcting the time zone, request a synchronization:

w32tm /resyncIf the computer needs to redetect its network time source, use:
w32tm /resync /rediscover/resync requests synchronization; it cannot guarantee success. The time client needs network access to its configured source, and Microsoft documents UDP port 123 as necessary for NTP synchronization. A firewall, captive portal, unavailable source, service failure, or organizational policy can prevent the request from succeeding.
Reset the Windows Time service only as a later step
If ordinary settings and synchronization continue to fail, re-registering the service is an escalation, not the first fix. Run every command in an elevated Command Prompt:

w32tm /resyncThe /unregister and /register commands alter Windows Time service registration. On a business or domain-joined computer, check with the administrator before changing time configuration. Microsoft explains that domain-joined computers normally synchronize through the Active Directory domain hierarchy, while standalone systems generally use configured NTP sources (Microsoft Windows Time documentation).
What to do when the clock keeps changing
It changes after every power-off
Set the time in Windows, restart, and compare it with the firmware or BIOS clock. If the firmware clock also loses time while the computer is powered off, have the CMOS/RTC battery tested or replaced. Software commands cannot repair a battery that no longer retains the hardware clock.
Only Windows changes it
Check the Windows Time service, scheduled tasks, and any domain policy. On dual-boot systems, Windows and another operating system may interpret the hardware clock as local time versus UTC; make both systems use the same convention.
It changes back immediately
Look for domain management, a persistent malware process, or a scheduled task that writes the time. If ComboFix was run on an unsupported Windows version, the system may need specialist malware-removal help rather than another attempt with ComboFix.

- “The computer did not resync because no time data was available”: verify Internet access, confirm the time zone, ensure Windows Time is running, check firewall rules for NTP traffic, and try
w32tm /resync /rediscover. - “Access is denied”: close the window and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- “The service has not been started”: run
net start w32time, then retry synchronization. - Domain-joined computer: do not force a public Internet server without checking policy; the domain hierarchy may be the intended source.
A manually entered time can keep an offline legacy computer usable, but it is temporary if the clock resets after shutdown or if accurate timestamps are required for certificates, updates, authentication, and scheduled tasks.
When to stop and get specialist help
- The computer is unbootable or remains infected after the scan.
- The clock changes despite correct Windows settings and a working time service.
- The firmware clock loses time while powered off.
- The computer is business-managed, domain-joined, or subject to security policy.
- ComboFix was used on an unsupported operating system.
In those cases, use a reputable malware-removal service or qualified technician rather than downloading another copy of ComboFix, a registry cleaner, or a “one-click clock repair” utility.
