To restore Windows 11 settings after a tweak causes problems, first identify what changed and whether Windows still starts. For a settings, driver, or software change, use System Restore if a restore point from before the tweak exists. If the trouble began after a Windows update, uninstall that update instead. Back up important files first, check exactly what the chosen recovery option can remove, and have your BitLocker recovery key ready before using recovery tools in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
Choose recovery based on what changed
Microsoft describes the two basic situations as “My PC starts, but something isn’t right” and “My PC won’t start.” If Windows starts, use the desktop when possible; if it does not, use the matching recovery option in WinRE. The cause matters too: a general tweak, an update, a Windows version upgrade, and damaged Windows components call for different tools.
| What changed or happened | Best matching option | Windows 11 availability and startup | Effect on personal files | Effect on apps, drivers, or settings | Restore point or external media |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A settings, driver, or software tweak changed system behavior | System Restore | Documented for Windows 11; works from Windows or WinRE | Personal files are not affected | Can undo system changes after the selected point, including later apps, drivers, updates, and settings | Requires a suitable restore point; no USB drive required |
| The issue began after a Windows update | Uninstall the update | Available from Windows or WinRE; some updates cannot be uninstalled | Microsoft says user files are not affected | Removes the selected update | No restore point or external media required |
| A Windows version upgrade caused the issue | Go back to the previous version | Usually available for 10 days after the upgrade, if required prior-version files remain | Personal files are kept | Removes apps, drivers, and settings changes made after the upgrade | No restore point required |
| A recent snapshot is available on a supported Windows 11 device, version 24H2 or later | Point-in-time restore | Check Settings > System > Recovery; availability and setup can vary | Files changed after the snapshot can be lost; cloud-stored files such as OneDrive files are not affected | Rolls back the operating system, apps, and settings | Requires a suitable snapshot; no external media required |
| Windows components are damaged, but Windows still starts | Fix problems using Windows Update | Not shown on every device; managed PCs and some older or unupdated installations may not have it | Preserves personal files | Reinstalls the same current Windows version and preserves apps and settings | No restore point or external media required |
| Other recovery options failed | Reset this PC | Use Windows or WinRE | “Keep my files” retains personal files; “Remove everything” deletes them | Both reset choices remove apps and settings | No restore point required; external media is not normally required |

Before you run a recovery option
- Back up important files. Microsoft advises backing up before recovery. When practical, use a backup made before the failed tweak.
- Check the date of the restore point or snapshot. A point created after the problem began may not undo it.
- Review what could change. System Restore offers an affected-program scan; other options have different effects on files, apps, drivers, and settings, as shown above.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. Most recovery paths in WinRE on an encrypted device require it. Do not guess at or try to bypass the key.
- Ask your organization’s IT team first if the PC is managed by work or school. Organizational policy can block recovery options.
Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the recovery process and its effect on system changes. The BitLocker recovery guide explains how to locate a recovery key.

Use System Restore for a broad system or settings tweak
System Restore is the best first choice when a tweak changed Windows behavior, drivers, or installed software and a restore point from before the change is available. It returns system files and settings to the selected point without affecting personal files. It can, however, undo later-installed programs, drivers, updates, and settings.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point, or press Win+R, type
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Select Next. Choose a restore point dated before the tweak; select Show more restore points if needed.
- Select the point, then choose Scan for affected programs. Review which apps and drivers may be removed or restored.
- If the date and effects are acceptable, select Next > Finish and allow Windows to restart.
If Windows will not load to the desktop, open WinRE and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, then select a point using the same checks.

If no suitable restore point appears
System Restore can only return the PC to a point that exists. Microsoft’s System Protection instructions say protection is not enabled by default in that guidance. Turning it on now does not create a restore point from before the failed tweak.
To prepare for future changes, search Start for Create a restore point, open System Protection > Configure, turn on system protection, allocate disk space, and select Apply. Before a planned major change, return to the same dialog and select Create to make a manual restore point.

If the issue began after a Windows update, uninstall that update
When the timing points to a Windows update rather than a general settings tweak, remove the update instead of rolling back unrelated changes with a restore point. Microsoft says this does not affect user files or apps, although some updates cannot be uninstalled. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows update.
- If Windows starts, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Select the update associated with the problem and choose Uninstall.
- If Windows will not start, open WinRE and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates, then follow the on-screen prompts.
Use Go back only for a recent Windows version upgrade
If the problem followed an upgrade to a newer Windows version, Go back can return the PC to its previous version. Microsoft says it is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, but the required files from the previous version must still be on the PC. Your personal files are kept; apps, drivers, and settings changes made after the upgrade are removed. Follow Microsoft’s Go back guidance if the option is available.

Consider Point-in-time restore for a recent, broader rollback
Point-in-time restore is distinct from System Restore. Microsoft lists it for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later; check Settings > System > Recovery because setup and availability can vary. When enabled, it creates points at regular intervals and retains them for up to 72 hours. It rolls back the operating system, apps, settings, and personal files, so changes made since the selected point can be lost. Microsoft says cloud-stored files such as OneDrive content are not affected. Read Microsoft’s Point-in-time restore documentation and review the point date and effects before proceeding.
Repair Windows components without resetting the PC
If Windows still starts but its components appear damaged, check whether Fix problems using Windows Update is available. The repair reinstalls the same current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft notes that the option is not displayed on all devices, including managed PCs and some older or unupdated Windows 11 installations. See Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions.

Reset this PC only when less disruptive options fail
Reset reinstalls Windows and is more disruptive than the options above. In Settings, open System > Recovery > Reset this PC, then choose between Keep my files, which retains personal files but removes apps and settings, and Remove everything, which also deletes personal files. Back up important data before either choice. If Windows will not start, use the reset option in WinRE.
If Windows will not start
WinRE provides recovery tools without loading the normal desktop. On an encrypted PC, most of these recovery paths require the BitLocker recovery key. If WinRE recovery options are unavailable or cannot repair the installation, a USB installation drive can be created on another working PC as a fallback; it is not needed for ordinary System Restore. Microsoft says the USB drive used to create installation media should have at least 8 GB, and creating the media erases its existing contents. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.
