If the Screen Options tab is missing in WordPress, first determine whether the tab itself disappeared or whether only a column, checkbox, or editor panel is hidden. The fix is usually to enable the item on the correct administration screen, open Block Editor Preferences, or isolate a plugin, theme, permission, or code conflict on a staging site.
What Screen Options controls
Screen Options is the hanging tab below the WordPress admin toolbar. WordPress describes it as a per-screen control for choosing which fields or modules appear in the administration work area. Its contents change with the current screen: Posts, Pages, Media, Comments, Users, and dashboard screens can expose different controls.
That means a missing column is not proof that the entire feature is broken. A column may simply be unchecked, while an editor panel may be controlled by the Block Editor’s Preferences instead of the classic Screen Options tab.
Identify the exact symptom
The Screen Options tab is visible
Open the tab at the upper right of the admin page. Enable the missing column, module, or field, then close the panel and refresh. On list screens, also check the “Number of items per page” value. The setting applies to that screen and, in many cases, to your user account rather than to every administrator.
The tab is absent on one screen
Record the exact URL and screen name. WordPress decides whether to display Screen Options for the current screen, so a screen-specific plugin or customization can affect one location without changing the rest of wp-admin.
A panel is missing only while editing
In the Block Editor, select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and choose Preferences. Review the Panels section and turn on the relevant panel. Also inspect the right-hand sidebar: some panels appear only when a block, post type, template, or document setting is selected. This is a separate interface from the classic Screen Options controls.
The tab is missing everywhere
A site-wide customization, plugin conflict, theme code, account setting, or JavaScript error is more likely. Continue with the checks below rather than changing a filter immediately.
Safe restoration checklist
- Confirm the screen. Open the exact Posts, Pages, dashboard, or other admin screen where the option should exist. Do not assume that an option available on Posts must also exist on Pages.
- Distinguish tab from item. If the tab opens, enable the unchecked item there. If the missing control is an editor panel, use Block Editor Preferences.
- Test another administrator account. Ask the site owner to compare the same screen. WordPress roles and capabilities govern access to admin actions, although a role restriction is not automatically the cause of a missing Screen Options tab.
- Check browser presentation. Temporarily disable extensions that alter pages, try a private window, clear a stale admin cache, and inspect the browser console for JavaScript errors. Test the same screen in a current second browser.
- Preserve a recovery path. Back up the site and database before disabling plugins, editing theme files, or changing custom code. Use staging whenever possible.
Isolate plugin and theme conflicts
Use session-only troubleshooting
WordPress’s Health Check and Troubleshooting plugin provides a troubleshooting mode for the administrator’s session. It can deactivate plugins and switch to a default theme for your session without changing what visitors see.

- Open Tools → Site Health → Troubleshooting and enable troubleshooting mode.
- Return to the affected admin screen and check whether Screen Options returns.
- If it does, enable plugins one at a time, refreshing after each change. Then switch back to the normal theme and test again.
- When the symptom returns, note the last plugin or theme enabled and contact its developer with the screen URL, WordPress version, and steps to reproduce.
Do not treat a successful troubleshooting session as proof until you reproduce the result by re-enabling components methodically. Troubleshooting mode is preferred because it limits the test to your administrator session.
If you cannot use the plugin
On staging, deactivate plugins in small groups and test a default theme such as Twenty Twenty-Five. Never perform a broad deactivation on a busy production site without a backup and a maintenance plan. A managed host’s staging environment can make this safer, but staging alone does not identify which component caused the problem.
What WordPress core checks
Internally, the current screen is represented by WP_Screen. Its show_screen_options() method considers whether the screen has meta boxes, column headers, per-page settings, screen settings, or other registered options. Core then applies the screen_options_show_screen filter to the calculated result.
This explains two useful patterns:
- A screen with no registered options may legitimately have no Screen Options tab.
- A plugin, theme, or custom mu-plugin can attach a callback to
screen_options_show_screenand force the tab to show or hide.
If you find code using that hook, have a developer review it on staging. Do not paste a filter override into a live site as a first response; an override can hide legitimate controls or create a new compatibility problem after a WordPress update.

Account, cache, and JavaScript checks
Account-specific behavior
Compare the affected account with a second administrator. If only one account is affected, inspect user-specific screen settings and role or capability differences. If every account sees the same result, prioritize plugins, themes, mu-plugins, and server-level customizations.
JavaScript and layout failures
A script error can prevent the tab or its contents from rendering even when the server generated them. Open browser developer tools, reload the page, and record the first console error, the failing script URL, and whether the error comes from an admin plugin. Also test with browser extensions disabled.
Caching
Exclude /wp-admin/ and logged-in users from page caching where your host or optimization plugin supports those rules. Purge the relevant cache, sign out, sign back in, and retest. Do not purge caches repeatedly without recording which cache was cleared; otherwise the cause becomes harder to identify.

When to ask for developer help
Escalate after the safe conflict test if the tab remains missing. Provide the affected screen name and URL, WordPress version, user role, active plugins, theme and mu-plugins, recent changes, browser and console errors, relevant PHP error-log entries, and the result of testing with troubleshooting mode. This evidence lets a developer inspect screen registration and the screen_options_show_screen callback without guessing.
