There is no single reset switch that restores every part of Word. To restore the default look of new documents, rename the Normal.dotm template; to reset Ribbon changes, use Word’s customization controls. Startup trouble calls for diagnosis first, while registry edits are a more advanced option for certain saved preferences.
Choose the narrowest method that matches what changed. The steps below are for Word on Windows 11; registry instructions reference Microsoft’s documented Office 16.0 path, whose applicability can depend on your installation and organization.
Which part of Word do you want to reset?
| Symptom | Best-fit action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| New blank documents have unwanted default styles or formatting | Rename Normal.dotm |
Word generates a fresh global template for future documents. |
| The Ribbon or Quick Access Toolbar was customized | Reset Ribbon customizations in Word Options | Restores those interface customizations; it does not reset document formatting. |
| Word behaves erratically or fails during startup | Test in Safe Mode, then investigate add-ins or startup items | Helps identify startup-related causes; Safe Mode itself is not a reset. |
| A supported Word preference or recent-file data needs troubleshooting | Consider the relevant registry procedure only after backing up | Rebuilds data associated with the selected registry key; it is not a universal reset. |
These actions have different scopes. Keep a copy of a template or export of customizations before changing them if you might want to restore them later.

Normal.dotm is Word’s global template. Microsoft says it supplies default styles and customizations that affect a document’s basic look, and that Word creates a new version using original default settings if the file is renamed, damaged, or moved. The regenerated template will not inherit customizations from the old one, so retain the old file if it may contain macros, styles, or other settings you need.
#1 Best Overall
- Close every Word window.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%appdata%MicrosoftTemplatesin the address bar. This corresponds to the Templates folder in your Windows user profile. - Find
Normal.dotm. Rename it to a name such asNormal.old.dotm, or move it to a backup folder. Do not permanently delete it if you may need its customizations. - Start Word. Word should create a new
Normal.dotmusing its original defaults. - Create a new blank document and check whether its default appearance is restored.
This changes the global template used for future documents. It does not promise to repair formatting already stored in an existing document or reset every Word preference. If the template cannot be changed because of permissions, check with your administrator or support rather than trying to force the change; Microsoft also documents template permissions in its default-font guidance.

Reset the Ribbon or Quick Access Toolbar
If only Word’s interface was customized, use the built-in reset rather than replacing the document template.
- In Word, open File > Options > Customize Ribbon.
- To restore all Ribbon tabs and the Quick Access Toolbar, select Reset > Reset all customizations.
- To restore just one Ribbon tab, select that tab and choose Reset > Reset only selected Ribbon tab.
Export the customizations first if you may want to recover them. Microsoft’s Ribbon customization instructions describe these reset options.

Check startup problems before changing broader settings
If Word is crashing, hanging, or behaving differently at launch, first test whether the problem appears in Safe Mode. This is a diagnostic launch, not a reset.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type
winword /safeand select OK. - If Word works in Safe Mode, open File > Options > Add-Ins in a normal session and investigate enabled add-ins. Check startup-folder content as well.
- Disable or remove suspected items selectively. Re-enable items one at a time to identify which one brings the problem back.
If Word will not start in Safe Mode, or continues to fail in normal mode, Microsoft recommends trying Office repair. See Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC and Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for Normal.dotm save prompts for related diagnosis.

Use the registry only for a specific preferences problem
Microsoft’s troubleshooting procedures describe deleting Word’s Data registry subkey to rebuild certain saved data, including the recent-file list, and discuss an Options subkey as a separate procedure. Registry editing is not a routine first step: an incorrect change can cause serious problems. The documented path below uses Office 16.0; do not assume it applies identically to every installation or managed work device.

Quick Recap
Best Value
What a Word reset will not do
- Renaming
Normal.dotmdoes not rewrite formatting saved in an existing document. - Resetting the Ribbon does not restore document styles or clear Word’s saved preferences.
- Safe Mode helps isolate startup causes; it does not restore original settings.
- Deleting a registry key affects the data associated with that key, not every Word setting.
