Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Active Directory Recycle Bin was enabled before an object was deleted, you can restore the object from the domain’s Deleted Objects container in Active Directory Administrative Center (ADAC), or use PowerShell’s Restore-ADObject cmdlet. Recycle Bin restores the object’s attributes and relationship state, including group-membership links. If it was not enabled before deletion, this method cannot recover the object.
Before you restore: check eligibility and scope
- It must have been enabled before the deletion. Enabling Recycle Bin now does not make earlier deletions recoverable. Microsoft says the feature is not enabled by default and enabling it is irreversible: “After you enable Active Directory Recycle Bin in your environment, you can’t disable it.” See Microsoft’s Enable and use Active Directory Recycle Bin.
- Confirm replication. After enablement, the configuration change must replicate to all domain controllers before the feature is fully functional throughout the forest. See Microsoft’s ADAC overview.
- Check where the object resides. ADAC handles domain partitions, but not Configuration, Domain DNS, or Forest DNS partitions. For objects in those nondomain partitions, use
Restore-ADObject. - Check retention in your forest. There is no universal number of days for recovery. The object’s deleted-object lifetime and tombstone lifetime settings affect whether it remains restorable; inspect the actual configuration rather than relying on a default. Objects that have become recycled are not shown in ADAC and cannot be restored there. Microsoft explains these settings in its ADAC overview and Recycle Bin troubleshooting guide.
Restore a deleted object in ADAC
- Open Active Directory Administrative Center with an account that has the required administrative access.
- Select or add the domain that contained the deleted object.
- Open that domain’s Deleted Objects container and locate the intended object. Deleted Objects is hidden by default from nonadministrators.
- Select the object. Choose Restore to return it to its original location, or Restore To to choose another destination.
- Check the destination container and confirm that the restored object is present.
Restoration returns an eligible object to its consistent logical state before deletion, including its attributes and group-membership relationships. If the original location is unsuitable or unavailable, select a different destination deliberately rather than assuming the object should return there. Microsoft documents the workflow in Enable and use Active Directory Recycle Bin.
Restore with PowerShell
Use the Active Directory module for Windows PowerShell in an elevated session. First identify and scope the deleted object using Get-ADObject -IncludeDeletedObjects, then pipe the intended result to Restore-ADObject. Add -TargetPath when restoring to a different OU or container.
Get-ADObject -Filter '<specific identifying filter>' -IncludeDeletedObjects |
Restore-ADObject -TargetPath '<destination distinguished name>'
This is a template, not a ready-to-run command: replace both bracketed values with a filter that selects only the intended object and a destination distinguished name that exists in your directory. Review the results of the query before restoring, especially in a live environment; avoid broad wildcard filters. The supported cmdlets and parameters are described in Microsoft’s Recycle Bin guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a nondomain partition, use the PowerShell restore route rather than ADAC. Follow the relevant Microsoft procedure for that partition and your environment; do not assume the domain-container workflow applies.
What to expect with deleted OUs and large containers
Restoring an OU does not automatically restore its contents
Restoring a deleted OU does not automatically restore nested OUs, users, groups, or computers. ADAC’s batch sorting is best effort, and a partial tree or a failed restore can affect child objects. Restore the parent first, then restore the subtree’s children as a separate action. See Microsoft’s ADAC overview.

ADAC’s display limit is not a recovery limit
The ADAC overview reports a default limit of 20,000 objects returned from a container, adjustable up to 100,000 in Management List Options. This is an interface display limit, not a maximum number of recoverable objects. Filter the Deleted Objects container when it is large so you can identify the right entry.
If the object is missing or cannot be restored
- Verify that Recycle Bin was enabled before deletion and that the enablement has replicated across the forest.
- Check that you are viewing the correct domain and that the object has not exceeded the configured deleted-object lifetime.
- If the object belongs to a nondomain partition, use the PowerShell recovery method rather than ADAC.
- If Recycle Bin cannot recover it, backup-based or authoritative restoration may be an option, but it is a higher-risk operation. Microsoft notes that older recovery methods may require restoring group-membership information, including former
memberandmemberOfvalues. The right procedure depends on the Windows Server version and backup state; follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
Choose the recovery route that fits
| Decision | Option | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | ADAC | For domain-partition objects when you want to locate and select an entry through the interface. |
| Interface | PowerShell Restore-ADObject |
For carefully scoped, repeatable operations and for objects in nondomain partitions. |
| Destination | Original location | Choose Restore when the object should return to its prior container. |
| Destination | Different location | Choose Restore To in ADAC or specify -TargetPath in PowerShell when the intended destination is different. |
| Scope | Single object | Restore and verify that object directly. |
| Scope | Deleted parent and descendants | Restore the parent, then restore children separately; ADAC does not guarantee a complete subtree in one action. |
| Recovery path | Recycle Bin | Use when enabled before deletion and the object remains restorable. |
| Recovery path | Backup or authoritative restore | Consider only when Recycle Bin cannot help, with attention to backup state and group-membership repair. |
If Recycle Bin is not enabled yet
Enabling it is a forest-wide, irreversible configuration change—not a way to recover objects already deleted. Microsoft’s current guide lists these prerequisites: Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher forest and domain functional levels, membership in Domain Admins in the domain being enabled, and ADAC or the Active Directory module for Windows PowerShell from RSAT. The protocol specification also confirms that the feature is forest-wide and requires at least the Windows Server 2008 R2 forest functional level; see Microsoft’s Active Directory technical specification.

You can enable Recycle Bin in ADAC by selecting the forest or domain context and choosing Enable Recycle Bin in the Tasks pane, then confirming and refreshing the console. Microsoft also documents Enable-ADOptionalFeature in an elevated PowerShell session. Carefully confirm the target forest before running a command; Microsoft’s example uses contoso.com, which must not be copied as a production target. If you encounter an error, Microsoft suggests trying the schema master and domain naming master roles on the same domain controller in the root domain, then running the cmdlet there. Wait for replication to all domain controllers before relying on the feature across the forest.
