Then determine whether the old profile folder is readable and whether you have a known-good backup. A new account with selective file copying may recover access when the profile itself will not load, but Microsoft’s current copying instructions are for Windows 10 and Windows 11—not a verified Windows 7 repair procedure.
Why does Windows say “You’ve been signed in with a temporary profile”?
Windows may load a temporary session when it cannot use the usual user profile. The desktop can look unfamiliar or appear to be missing files, but that alone does not show that the original profile’s files have been erased.
Protect anything created during the temporary session before signing out. Microsoft Learn explains: “Temporary profiles are deleted at the end of each session, and changes made by the user to desktop settings and files are lost when the user logs off.” Save new documents to a separate drive or another location you can access later.
Note what happens when you try to sign in: a temporary-profile notice, a profile-load error, or an account that opens but seems to have missing settings or files. These symptoms do not by themselves identify the cause or establish that a particular repair will be safe.

How to protect the old profile’s files
If you can sign in to a separate administrator account and access the old user folder, make a separate copy of important, readable files before attempting recovery. Microsoft’s backup guidance describes external drives as one possible storage destination; an external hard drive for Windows backup can be used as optional storage for that copy, but it does not repair the profile.
- Keep the original profile folder intact while you check that the copied files open and that you have everything you need.
- Do not delete or overwrite the old folder as part of an improvised repair.
- If the folder cannot be read or the drive may be failing, prioritize preserving the data rather than repeatedly attempting changes to the installation.
Should you restore a backup or move files to a new profile?
These are different recovery paths. Restoring selected files from a known-good backup is not the same as restoring the computer’s entire system state. If you have a verified backup, use it to recover the files you need. If the old folder remains readable but Windows will not load that profile, a new account and selective file migration may be a more targeted way to regain a usable sign-in.

| Situation | Reasonable next step | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| The old profile folder is readable, but the profile will not load | Consider creating a new account and copying accessible personal files selectively. | Microsoft’s published copying procedure is written for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not Windows 7. |
| A known-good backup exists | Restore the needed files from that backup. | File restoration is not a full system-state restore. |
| The old folder is inaccessible or the disk may be failing | Focus on preserving data and seek qualified help if the files matter. | The material cited here does not establish a Windows 7-specific recovery sequence for this case. |
| The problem appears to involve Windows recovery or a system/disk issue, not only the profile | Use recovery guidance only if its operating-system version, conditions, and error match your situation. | Legacy System Restore fixes are narrow and are not general profile-repair instructions. |
How to copy readable files into a new account
Microsoft’s current corrupted-profile instructions describe creating a new administrator account, signing into it, copying accessible files from the old user folder to the new one, and restarting. The documented folder pattern is C:Users<Old_Username> to C:Users<New_Username>. Microsoft scopes that procedure to Windows 10 and Windows 11, so treat it only as conceptual file-migration guidance for Windows 7—not as a verified Windows 7 walkthrough.
- Using an account with administrator access, create a new account and make it an administrator, following instructions appropriate to your Windows version.
- Sign in to the new account so Windows creates its profile folder, then sign out if needed to access the folders from another administrator session.
- Copy the accessible files you need from the old user folder to the corresponding locations in the new one. Keep the old folder unchanged until you have checked the results.
- Restart the computer and sign in to the new account. Open the copied files and confirm that essential data is present before deciding what else must be migrated.
Copying a user folder does not necessarily recreate all application state. Microsoft notes that email in some programs may need to be imported separately and that previously installed applications may need reconfiguration or reinstallation.

In Microsoft Support’s Windows 10/11 procedure, the warning is: “Do not change File Explorer view options to show hidden files and folders or show hidden protected operating system files.” That caution belongs to that specific published procedure; do not change Explorer settings to expose protected files as an improvised Windows 7 repair step.

System Restore addresses system changes; it is not a method for recovering ordinary user files or a universal fix for a profile that will not load. Microsoft’s Windows 7 recovery articles document specific failures, not a general profile-repair recipe.

- One Windows 7 Service Pack 1 article covers a System Restore failure during file-system scanning, including error
0x80070057. Its discussion includes checking the disk and trying another restore point; any hotfix described there is limited to the documented issue. - Another Microsoft article describes a Windows Recovery Environment System Restore failure with
E_UNEXPECTED (0x8000FFFF)under a particular update sequence.
Before relying on either legacy article, match the Windows edition and service pack, recovery environment, error, and circumstances. Do not apply a hotfix just because a profile is damaged or an error looks similar.
What Windows 7’s end of support means
Microsoft ended Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. Microsoft says unsupported Windows devices can continue to run, but no longer receive its technical support, software updates, or security updates. After protecting the files you need, plan a move to a supported system.
