Short answer: YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let an encoder start or stop a broadcast, but they do not guarantee that every dropped connection, encoder crash, or power failure will recover automatically. Check the broadcast and encoder settings, then test the failure you need to handle. First, determine what actually disconnected
A stream appearing offline to viewers does not by itself show whether the encoder stopped sending video, YouTube stopped receiving it, or the YouTube broadcast ended. Check both sides before changing settings:
- Look at the encoder’s status and logs for a lost connection, stopped output, or application error.
- In YouTube Studio, check whether the stream is still receiving the encoder’s feed and whether the broadcast is still active.
- Note whether the cause was a brief internet interruption, a stopped or crashed encoder, or loss of power. These failures require different recovery behavior.
The available YouTube guidance does not establish that these states always behave alike, nor does it give a universal recovery time.
Check YouTube’s stream settings and protect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and inspect the settings for the relevant live stream, including the stream key, server URL, and auto-start and auto-stop selections. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page explains that a stream key connects the encoder to the feed and that auto-start and auto-stop allow starting or stopping from the encoder.
- Confirm that the encoder is using the correct YouTube stream key and server URL. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes selecting YouTube or entering the YouTube server URL and key, then starting the encoder’s transmission.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Auto-start and auto-stop are controls for starting and stopping a stream from the encoder; they are not a promise that YouTube will restart a failed encoder or restore every interrupted connection.

Check the encoder’s reconnect behavior
Look for a reconnect or retry option in the encoder you actually use, and check its documentation for your installed version. Controls and behavior vary by encoder. The YouTube guidance above does not provide one YouTube-side switch that restarts every encoder after an outage.
Separate two questions: will the encoder retry sending its feed, and will the YouTube broadcast still be available to receive it? A retry on one side does not establish that the other side is ready. Test both rather than assuming the viewer-facing stream will resume.

If you use OBS, verify the broadcast workflow
OBS Project’s YouTube setup guide covers the YouTube broadcast workflow, including scheduled broadcasts and auto-stop considerations. Check the current OBS and YouTube interfaces, because labels and behavior can change. OBS community guidance notes that auto-stop can affect whether reconnection is possible later without scheduling another broadcast.

An OBS forum participant reported in 2020 that creating a scheduled stream resolved that person’s reconnect problem. That is an anecdote about one setup, not a general fix or an official guarantee. Treat a scheduled broadcast as something to test, not as proof that your stream will recover unattended.

Test the failures you need to survive
- Start the broadcast using the normal encoder and YouTube workflow.
- Briefly interrupt the network connection, then restore it. Watch whether the encoder retries and whether YouTube Studio resumes receiving the feed.
- Separately stop and restart the encoder. A network interruption and an application restart are different failure modes.
- Check what viewers see and whether the YouTube broadcast remains active. Do not rely only on the encoder showing that it has reconnected.
- Record the encoder name and version, operating system, broadcast type, auto-stop setting, and whether Studio shows incoming video after recovery. These details help narrow down a failure that persists.
The retrieved official guidance does not specify a guaranteed outage window or reconnection period. Test the actual configuration before relying on unattended operation.
Understand the broadcast’s lifecycle
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guide. Archiving is a lifecycle detail, not a reconnection guarantee; it does not show that a broadcast will restart after an interruption.
