After a power cut, restore Windows and your internet connection, reopen your encoder, confirm its YouTube server URL and stream key, and start sending the radio feed. Then check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: for a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. A restarted PC or encoder does not, by itself, prove that the same broadcast has resumed.

Recover the livestream in the right order

Power returning, Windows starting, the encoder opening, and YouTube showing a live broadcast are separate events. Work through each one and verify the result before assuming listeners can hear the stream.

  1. Confirm Windows and the network are ready. Let the computer finish starting, then check that it has internet access. If the PC did not turn on when power returned, check the computer or motherboard maker’s documentation. Some devices have a firmware setting commonly called Restore on AC Power Loss or Restore on Power Loss, but names and behavior vary by device; Windows alone does not control this behavior on every computer. Microsoft’s community Q&A on the subject contains conflicting answers, so it is not a definitive setup guide: Microsoft Q&A.
  2. Open the encoder. Launch OBS or the encoder you normally use. Check that it has loaded the correct radio video, audio source, scene, or playlist and that the output is configured for the intended YouTube stream.
  3. Verify YouTube’s destination and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and a stream key. A saved encoder profile may retain them after a reboot, so a power cut alone does not mean you must replace the key. Keep the key private: YouTube says it functions like a password and address for your stream. Review the stream’s settings in Manage live stream settings and the encoder setup instructions.
  4. Start sending the feed. Start streaming from the encoder. Watch for an encoder error, and confirm the output is actually moving rather than assuming the application being open means it is sending video.
  5. Verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the scheduled stream or current event in Live Control Room and wait for the preview. Check that the picture and audio are right and review stream health. For a scheduled stream, click Go live after the preview appears, unless that stream’s auto-start setting is enabled. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop as optional stream settings, not an automatic consequence of restarting the encoder.

YouTube’s computer livestream tips cover encoder preparation and preview checks. The key distinction is that a running encoder is not proof that the event is live and audible to viewers.

Choose a recovery approach

Approach What it can do Limit to plan for
Manual recovery Lets you inspect Windows, network, encoder output, preview, and broadcast status at each stage. Someone must be available to complete the checks and, when required, click Go live.
Configured startup automation Firmware may be configured to power the PC on after AC returns; Windows startup or Task Scheduler may be used to launch OBS. These are separate configurations, and neither establishes that YouTube received the feed or that the broadcast went live. Community discussions do not establish a universal, reliable auto-resume procedure. Test any automation with an unlisted stream and know how to stop it. See OBS Project Forums.
UPS for a short interruption A suitably sized uninterruptible power supply may keep the computer and networking equipment powered through a brief outage. Runtime depends on the total connected load and battery capacity; a UPS cannot guarantee continuity through a longer outage or a separate internet disruption. YouTube does not endorse a particular model in its streaming tips.

For unattended radio, treat automation as a way to reduce hands-on recovery—not as proof that a YouTube event will continue without interruption. A short power bridge can help only if the computer and network equipment are both covered.

Check stream health and settings after reconnecting

Bandwidth and connection

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could break a stream. Its guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and ensuring available upload bandwidth can handle the total stream bitrate; account for primary and backup streams where applicable. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a stream will survive an outage. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Do not apply one bitrate figure to every radio stream: the appropriate encoder settings depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s current settings page, reviewed in 2026, recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p60 and 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Those are recommendations for those specific configurations, not a universal requirement. Check the matching row for your output in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

Stream key and encoder errors

If the encoder reports a start error, check the network and output configuration first. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions advise copying a stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a key-related start error occurs: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream. Do not share the key publicly.

What happens to the scheduled event and archive?

For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented encoder flow is to start sending the feed, wait for the preview, then choose Go live. If auto-start is enabled for that stream, the encoder can start the broadcast instead. Check the particular event’s settings; restarting Windows does not determine which behavior is enabled.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its documentation does not promise that reconnecting after a power cut preserves one uninterrupted broadcast or one continuous archive. After recovery, check what appears in YouTube Studio: Create a live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures

  • The PC stays off after power returns: Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s firmware instructions for an AC-restoration setting. The setting is device-dependent, not a universal Windows switch.
  • Windows is back, but OBS or the encoder is closed: Start it manually. If you configure Windows startup or Task Scheduler to launch it, test the full process on an unlisted stream; launching the app is not the same as starting a YouTube broadcast.
  • The encoder is open but YouTube shows no preview: Confirm internet access, the selected encoder output, server URL, and stream key. Start the encoder’s stream output and wait for Live Control Room to receive it.
  • The encoder reports a stream-key or start error: Retrieve the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder as directed by YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
  • The preview appears, but the scheduled stream is not live: Check the event’s auto-start setting. If it is not enabled, review the preview and click Go live.
  • The feed starts and then drops or has poor health: Check whether the network is stable and whether upload capacity has headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. A power cut may be over while the router or internet connection is still recovering.
  • The stream returns, but the archive is unexpected: Inspect the event and archived video in YouTube Studio. The under-12-hour archive rule does not establish that an interrupted broadcast remains one continuous event.
