Run FFmpeg as a systemd service on the VPS. Enable the service for the machine’s boot target, set a restart policy for process failures, and verify YouTube is receiving video after a reboot. These are separate checks: systemd can restart FFmpeg, but it cannot prove that the remote broadcast is advancing.
What boot automation does—and does not—do
There are two recovery layers to configure. systemd can start FFmpeg when Linux boots and restart it after qualifying process exits. FFmpeg can also retry certain network-output failures while the process is running. Neither layer detects every silent freeze or guarantees that viewers see advancing video. Use both where appropriate, then check the stream itself.
| Layer | What it handles | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg output recovery | Retries some output failures while FFmpeg remains active; options include attempt_recovery and recovery-wait settings. Check that the installed FFmpeg version supports the options you choose. |
Boot startup or YouTube playback of advancing video. FFmpeg protocol documentation |
| systemd | Boot activation when enabled and restarting the process according to the unit’s Restart= policy. |

Prepare the VPS, playlist, and stream credentials
- Choose stable paths and a service account. Put the media files, playlist lists, and FFmpeg command where a dedicated, unprivileged service user can read them. Use absolute paths. A sample configuration from another Ubuntu VPS is installation-specific; replace its usernames and paths rather than copying them blindly.
- Prepare the playlist inputs. A common arrangement uses FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with separate file lists for video and audio, then loops each input indefinitely. Confirm every listed file exists, is readable by the service user, and has the intended ordering. A malformed path or permission change can make the service fail immediately after boot.
- Get the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key for the intended stream and follow the encoder and protocol requirements shown there. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS setup; an implementation example uses RTMP. These endpoints and protocols are not interchangeable by assumption, so use the current configuration associated with your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a password. Do not put it in a public repository or expose it in publicly accessible logs. Restrict access to any file or environment configuration that contains it, and check the command and unit before sharing diagnostic output.
Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
Run FFmpeg in the foreground under systemd; do not background it with shell syntax such as &. A unit needs a service command with your actual executable and paths, a suitable restart policy, and an install relationship that connects it to the machine’s normal boot target.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a long-running process expected to stay active, Restart=on-failure is a reasonable starting policy: it asks systemd to restart after qualifying failures, rather than treating every intentional clean exit as a failure. Add a restart delay so repeated errors do not trigger immediate retries, and review the unit’s start-rate limits to avoid a rapid failure loop. The precise unit should match your FFmpeg command, Linux distribution, systemd version, and credential-handling approach; consult the installed systemd documentation before deployment.

- Create a unit file under
/etc/systemd/system/with a descriptive name, such asyoutube-playlist.service. Configure the service account, working directory if needed, and anExecStart=command that runs FFmpeg directly with absolute paths. - In the
[Service]section, configure the selectedRestart=policy and a delay between restarts. Ensure the process remains in the foreground so systemd tracks the right process. - Add an
[Install]section with the appropriate boot target relationship for the distribution. A typical system service usesWantedBy=multi-user.target, but confirm the target and conventions on your VPS. - After saving the unit, reload systemd’s configuration, then enable and start the service with
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadandsudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. Replace the example unit name with your own.enableconfigures activation at boot;--nowalso starts it immediately. Alternatively, enable it and start it separately. See systemctl documentation.
Test startup and confirm the broadcast is advancing
- Check the service state with
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service. If it is failing, inspect recent logs withsudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -n 100 --no-pager. Look for missing files, permission errors, invalid FFmpeg options, and ingest connection errors. - Schedule a reboot during a maintenance window, then reconnect and check
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceand the service journal. Confirm the service started as expected rather than assuming that enabling it was sufficient. - Separately check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming media and verify that the public stream’s picture and audio advance. A running process and advancing local counters alone are not proof of healthy viewer playback.
One implementation report describes a silent freeze in which local process indicators continued advancing while the YouTube stream appeared frozen. The author’s proposed cause was a working theory, not an established general explanation. The practical lesson is to monitor media progress and verify the YouTube-side stream rather than relying on process uptime alone. See the implementation guide for that operator’s configuration and report.
Add monitoring for silent failures
Use a watchdog or an external check that can detect stalled media progress, then alert or trigger a deliberate recovery action. Decide what counts as progress for your stream and test the monitor by simulating a stopped or stalled output where safe. A frame-counter check and scheduled preventive restart appear in one operator’s setup, but those are implementation-specific tactics, not universal requirements. A preventive restart can interrupt a healthy broadcast, so weigh that cost against the failure mode it is intended to reduce.

Understand what an FFmpeg restart means on YouTube
Restarting FFmpeg re-establishes encoder output; it does not necessarily create, start, schedule, or end a YouTube broadcast. YouTube represents a live stream and a live broadcast as separate API resources, so broadcast lifecycle handling may need its own configuration depending on the workflow. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Troubleshoot common restart problems
- The service does not start after reboot: Confirm the unit was enabled, the install target is appropriate, and systemd was reloaded after edits. Check
systemctl statusand the journal for a failed command or dependency. - FFmpeg starts and exits repeatedly: Validate the command manually as the same service user, then check absolute paths, file permissions, playlist syntax, FFmpeg option compatibility, stream URL, and key. Review restart delays and start-rate limits rather than allowing a rapid loop to continue unnoticed.
- The service is active but YouTube is not receiving media: Check current ingest details and protocol in Live Control Room, then inspect FFmpeg’s output logs for connection or authentication errors. A process marked active is not equivalent to a healthy ingest.
- YouTube appears frozen while the process remains alive: Check media-progress monitoring and confirm the viewer-facing stream advances. Restarting the service may restore output, but investigate and monitor the underlying symptom instead of treating uptime as proof of recovery.
- FFmpeg recovers from a network error but the broadcast is still wrong: Output retries address some connection failures, not all broadcast lifecycle or playback issues. Verify the YouTube broadcast separately and determine whether the encoder output needs to be re-established.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream rather than managing a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video playback, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or plan details. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
