After Windows updates and restarts, OBS closes with the PC, so your YouTube gaming stream usually needs to be restored manually. Open OBS, check your scene and stream key, start streaming, then verify the preview and event status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A reconnect setting can help if only the connection drops; it does not, by itself, reopen OBS after Windows reboots.
Restore the stream after Windows restarts
- Let Windows finish updating. Sign in after the restart and allow any remaining update setup to complete before launching the encoder. Windows may require a restart to finish installing an update. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains restart scheduling and active hours.
- Open OBS or the encoder you used. Check that the correct profile and scene collection loaded. Confirm the game capture, microphone, desktop or game audio, and overlays are present; watch the audio meters and test the scene if needed. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking sources and audio and testing settings.
- Check the YouTube destination and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and compare its stream settings with the encoder. The stream URL tells the encoder where to send video; the stream key authorizes the feed. Treat the key like a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Start streaming from the encoder. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Watch Live Control Room for the incoming feed and preview. If this is a scheduled event that requires a manual start, wait for the preview and select Go live in Studio. YouTube describes that sequence in its encoder setup instructions.
- Verify picture and sound before leaving it unattended. Confirm the preview shows the game and that microphone and game audio are audible. Check stream health and monitor audio and video quality, as recommended in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Check the recording afterward. In YouTube Studio, inspect Live content and the channel archive. If OBS recorded locally, check that file too. Do not assume that the interruption and restarted broadcast have been combined into one continuous VOD; verify what Studio actually archived.
Choose the right recovery path

OBS lists Configure Automatic Reconnect in its Advanced settings, but reconnecting an interrupted connection is different from launching OBS after a full reboot. OBS documents a separate --startstreaming launch parameter and instructions for adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. Automated launches also need a working directory; test the entire boot-and-connect sequence, including a PC that starts before internet access is ready. Protect the VOD and understand interruptions
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours, and warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an operational threshold, not a guarantee that any particular broadcast will be archived. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup and checking that the local archive file is growing.

DVR is a viewer feature for pausing, rewinding, and resuming during a live stream; it is not the same as the archived VOD. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR information.

The official setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder and start an event, but do not promise that a Windows reboot resumes the same event seamlessly or that separate sessions are stitched into one video. Check the event and archive in Studio, and retain the local recording if you have one. An external SSD is one possible place to keep a local backup; the suitable capacity and connection depend on your recording bitrate, session length, and PC ports.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not return
- OBS rejects the stream key: Copy the current key from the event’s Live Control Room and update the encoder. Reset it only if necessary; YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key. Keep the key private. Manage live stream settings.
- The encoder starts, but stream health is poor: Check the local audio and video sources, encoder error messages, CPU load, and outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
- The preview is black or the game is missing: Verify the active OBS scene and game capture source. OBS supports Game Capture for 3D games; test that the intended source is visible before going live. OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Studio says the event is live, but there is no usable feed: Use the Live Control Room preview and stream health to diagnose the state. Avoid repeatedly creating events or exposing or resetting the key without a reason. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring the stream.
- You are worried about missing footage: Check both the local recording and YouTube’s archive. YouTube specifically recommends a local backup, particularly because streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Archive live streams.
Reduce the chance of another interruption
- Schedule Windows restarts outside broadcast windows and set active hours to limit automatic restart timing while you are using the PC. Windows updates cannot be stopped permanently, though pausing is available temporarily. See the Windows Update FAQ.
- Set up OBS and the YouTube event ahead of time. Preview the feed before going live, confirm sources and audio, and monitor the stream once it starts. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend these checks.
- Keep a local recording when the footage matters, and verify that the file is growing during the broadcast. This gives you a separate copy to inspect if the YouTube archive is incomplete.
- If you configure OBS to launch and start streaming automatically after boot, test it before relying on it. Reconnect settings do not cover the separate problem of launching the encoder after Windows closes it.
