In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. Set a retry count and retry delay appropriate for your connection. This makes OBS retry its connection to YouTube after a drop; it does not guarantee that every interruption will restore the same YouTube live event or resume without a visible break.
Turn on automatic reconnect in OBS
-
Open OBS Studio and select Settings, then Advanced.
-
Find the Network or reconnect controls and enable Automatically Reconnect. The exact layout and available options can vary by OBS version.
-
Choose a maximum retry count and starting retry delay if those options are shown. OBS documents retry settings for supported outputs, with the wait doubling on later attempts. There is no universal recovery time: actual recovery depends on the output, settings, and how quickly the connection returns.

Select Apply and OK, then verify the settings before the scheduled broadcast. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers connection issues and dropped frames.
Automatic reconnect is an encoder function. It retries the connection when it fails; it cannot fix a network that remains unavailable or guarantee that YouTube will restore the broadcast in precisely its previous state.
Check YouTube’s stream settings and protect the key
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that OBS is configured with the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube treats a stream key like a password and address: do not show it in public screenshots or share it in logs. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the new key. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.

Test what happens when the encoder briefly loses its connection, and confirm whether OBS retries and YouTube receives the stream again. Do not assume a successful reconnect preserves the same event state; verify the outcome in your own setup.
-
If you plan to use a backup encoder, test the switchover separately. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during the test, then confirming that the player moves to the backup. A backup encoder is a separate continuity measure, not a setting that restarts the primary encoder. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Diagnose drops that reconnect cannot fix
If OBS keeps retrying without getting back online, look for a persistent connection problem rather than simply increasing retries. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total bitrate of the stream. That is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable.

-
Other traffic is competing for bandwidth: Pause large uploads, downloads, backups, or other streams during the broadcast and retest.
-
Wi-Fi is unstable: OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. Connect by Ethernet where practical and test again.
