To restart a disconnected YouTube stream, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live, select the affected stream, and read its current status or stream-health message before retrying. If an encoder error points to the stream key, copy the key shown in Live Control Room into your encoder, then reconnect or start the encoder. Reset the key only when needed; a reset requires updating the encoder with the replacement.
The right recovery depends on whether the encoder failed to connect, your software uses YouTube sign-in instead of a key, or the live event has already ended. YouTube does not document one universal restart button or guarantee that a reconnect will continue the same viewer session.
Diagnose the disconnect in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Select the affected stream and open its Stream view or dashboard.
- Read the current status and stream-health message before changing settings. YouTube says these messages can identify specific errors and offer corrective instructions. Follow the message that applies to your encoder or stream.
A stream-health warning, an encoder connection error, and an event that has ended are different conditions. Check whether your encoder is still sending a feed and whether the event remains active; that determines which recovery path to use.
Reconnect an encoder that uses a stream key
If the encoder reports an error starting or connecting, first check that it has the key for this stream. YouTube’s documented troubleshooting flow is to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and enter it in the third-party encoder.

- In Live Control Room, open the affected stream’s Stream key area and copy the key.
- In your encoder, paste that key into its stream-key field. Check that the encoder is configured for the matching stream and connection settings.
- Start or reconnect the encoder. Follow its on-screen error guidance if it still cannot connect.
- Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. If this stream setup requires a manual start, select Go live.
- Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed, then check the stream-health status again.
Do not assume that the reconnect will restore the same session for viewers. YouTube’s reviewed instructions do not promise universal continuity after a disconnect.
When to reset the stream key
A reset replaces the existing key; it is not a general fix for every network outage or encoder interruption. Use it when you have a reason to replace the key or the troubleshooting steps call for it.

- In Live Control Room, open Stream → Stream key → Reset.
- Copy the newly generated key and replace the old key in your encoder.
- Start or reconnect the encoder, then check for a preview and a healthy incoming feed.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. Editors and viewers cannot. If you reset it but leave the old value in the encoder, that encoder will not be using the replacement key.
If your streaming software connects by signing in
Some third-party software connects to YouTube when you sign in, rather than asking you to paste a stream key. For an error in that flow, YouTube directs operators to the software provider’s support team; the app may need an update to work with YouTube Live. Reconnect and retry controls are specific to that software, so use its own instructions rather than assuming the stream-key steps apply.

If the live event has ended
First determine whether the event is still active or has ended. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping the content from the encoder and, in the scheduled flow, selecting End Stream in Live Control Room. Its documentation does not establish that an ended event can always be restarted as the same live session. If it has ended, use the appropriate stream setup and management flow in Live Control Room to start or schedule a stream; do not treat a reconnect as a guaranteed continuation of the ended event.
What the 12-hour guidance means
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Separately, it says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These statements concern archiving and viewer rewind, respectively; they do not establish a universal 12-hour maximum or say that YouTube automatically stops every longer stream.

For a 24/7 channel, test how your chosen encoder handles long-running output, reconnects, archive files, and viewer continuity before relying on it continuously. YouTube recommends checking local archive files, but an archive is not a substitute for confirming that the live feed is working.
Prevent and prepare for another interruption
- Test before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing an encoder before an event and monitoring stream health and status messages while live.
- Prepare failover deliberately. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable during a test and confirming that playback rolls over to a backup encoder. A backup only helps if it is configured and the failover behavior has been verified.
- Keep recovery information available. Know where the encoder’s stream-key field and reconnect controls are, and who on the channel has permission to reset the key.
- Consider production needs. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Hardware alone does not prevent outages or replace checking the status message and matching the stream key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an encoder and computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud. It is YouTube-only.
