First, check whether YouTube sent a copyright removal request or a Content ID claim, and whether a scheduled removal is still pending. A scheduled takedown gives you seven days to act; you cannot file a counter-notification until a removal takes effect and a copyright strike is applied. If YouTube removes an active live stream for copyright, the channel receives a strike and loses live-streaming access for seven days. Your next step depends on the notice stage and the evidence you have—not simply on whether the channel needs to go live again.
Identify the notice before responding
Read the notice email and check YouTube Studio. YouTube’s copyright-removal guidance distinguishes a legal copyright removal request from a Content ID claim. A removal request can lead to the video being taken down and a copyright strike; a Content ID claim is a separate system action and typically does not result in a strike. A claim, dispute, or appeal is not the same procedure as a takedown and counter-notice.
In YouTube Studio, inspect the channel’s Copyright filter and the video’s Restrictions or “See details” information. Confirm the exact status and wording rather than relying on an email subject line or assuming that any copyright notice means a strike has been applied. This article reflects YouTube Help guidance reviewed on October 3, 2026; Studio labels and procedures may change.

YouTube says that when an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. That platform consequence does not establish whether the claimant is right or whether you have a legal defense.

A notice may instead say that removal is scheduled. In that case, the content has not yet been removed and the strike has not yet been applied. YouTube gives the uploader seven days to take an available action. If no action is taken, YouTube says it removes the content and applies a strike. A counter-notice is not available during this scheduled period.
Preserve the notice and check the stream’s rights
Before deleting files, changing a stream archive, or contacting the claimant, make a record of what happened. YouTube advises documenting communications and supporting evidence.

- Save the email and notice, including the claimant identity and contact details shown by YouTube.
- Record the stream or video URL, its status in Studio, relevant timestamps, the claimed work, and the timestamps identified in the notice.
- Keep the stream archive if it is available, along with original source files, licenses, permissions, contracts, and communications with the claimant.
- Review every potentially relevant element in the stream: music in the background, game footage, overlays, guest contributions, and third-party clips—not only the main video.
Deleting a video after a strike does not, by itself, remove the strike. Do not treat deletion as a post-strike remedy.
Choose a response based on the notice stage
| What Studio shows | Platform options described by YouTube | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled removal request | Before the deadline, delete the content or ask the claimant to retract the request. If the takedown followed a rejected Content ID appeal, YouTube also lists canceling that appeal as an option. | A counter-notice is available only after the removal is effective and the strike exists. A claimant does not have to agree to retract. |
| Effective copyright removal and strike | Complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire after 90 days; seek a claimant retraction; or consider a counter-notice if you genuinely believe the removal resulted from mistake or misidentification. | Strike expiry does not reinstate the removed video. A counter-notice is a legal request, not a routine way to restore a stream. |
| Content ID claim, without a removal strike | Use the claim’s own Studio details and claim or appeal process if appropriate. | Do not file a counter-notice as though a Content ID claim were a copyright takedown. |
For a scheduled removal, act within the period stated by YouTube. If the notice is already an effective removal, choose among the post-strike routes based on your evidence and risk tolerance rather than assuming that an appeal or deletion will undo the strike.

When a counter-notice may be appropriate
YouTube describes a counter-notification as a legal request. It is meant for an uploader who has a good-faith basis to say that the removal was a mistake or misidentification. YouTube names copyright exceptions such as fair use, fair dealing, and public domain as potentially relevant, but whether one applies depends on the facts and jurisdiction. A belief that a stream is important, or that it needs to be restored quickly, is not itself a basis for filing.
Assess the rights to all content included in the stream, including background music. Gather licenses, permission records, original files, and evidence showing why the material was misidentified or why the removal may have been mistaken. If the facts are complex or disclosure of personal details is a concern, YouTube says an authorized representative, such as an attorney, may submit on your behalf. Legal advice may help assess your situation, but it cannot guarantee a platform outcome.

What filing a counter-notice requires
YouTube’s instructions say a video counter-notice can be submitted through the Studio flow or by email, fax, or mail. Follow YouTube’s current official instructions for the route and fields available when you file. The email instructions call for:
- Your full legal name—not a channel or company name—physical address, and telephone number.
- A direct URL to the removed video or stream content.
- A concise explanation to the claimant of why you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification.
- The required legal statements, including consent to jurisdiction and acceptance of service, and a sworn good-faith belief that removal resulted from mistake or misidentification.
- Your signature using your full legal name, or the signature of an authorized representative submitting on your behalf.
YouTube shares a counter-notice with the claimant. Consider that disclosure and the legal statements carefully before submitting; do not use false contact information or file only to regain live access. YouTube also says it cannot determine ownership or mediate on behalf of content owners.

What happens after YouTube forwards a valid counter-notice
After forwarding a valid counter-notice, YouTube gives the claimant 10 U.S. business days to provide evidence of qualifying legal action to restrain the allegedly infringing activity. YouTube identifies a lawsuit, court order, a Copyright Claims Board (CCB) claim where the uploader is U.S.-based, or a CCB infringement determination as possible evidence. If qualifying legal action is pending, the content may remain down while that action proceeds.
If the claimant does not provide the required evidence in that period, YouTube says the content may be reinstated unless you deleted it. Reinstatement is possible, not guaranteed. Check the counter-notice status in Studio and keep records of YouTube’s updates and any claimant communications.
Troubleshoot common notice situations
- The email says removal is scheduled, but Studio shows no strike: Confirm the video status and deadline in Studio. A scheduled request is not yet an effective removal, so use the available pre-removal choices rather than trying to submit a counter-notice.
- The stream is offline and the channel cannot start another live stream: Check whether YouTube applied a copyright strike for removal of the active stream. YouTube states that this event restricts live-stream access for seven days; changing streaming software or restarting an encoder does not resolve that platform restriction.
- You see a Content ID claim, not a removal: Follow the claim’s own details in Studio. A claim is not automatically a strike, and the counter-notice route is for an effective copyright removal.
- You deleted the stream but the strike remains: Deletion after an effective strike does not itself clear the strike. Review YouTube’s post-strike options instead.
- You are unsure whether you own or may use every element: Pause before filing. Review the music, footage, overlays, and other third-party material, and seek qualified legal advice if needed. YouTube does not decide ownership or mediate disputes.
- You filed and the stream has not returned: Check the notice status in Studio and distinguish the claimant’s response period from a promise of restoration. Qualifying legal action can keep content down, and reinstatement is not certain.
Keep future authorized streams running without a home computer
A cloud streaming service can change where authorized, properly licensed uploaded videos are played from; it cannot resolve a takedown, supply copyright permission, or prevent an infringement claim. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously. You upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the upload from the cloud.
