To resolve a goimports error, first identify whether it is an import-grouping issue, a local module that Go cannot see, or a private dependency Go cannot fetch. Use -local only to organize imports; use go.work or a replace directive for local modules, and configure Go’s private-module and proxy settings for remote dependencies.
First, identify what failed
goimports updates import lines—adding missing imports and removing unreferenced ones—and formats source in gofmt style. It does not replace Go’s module system or make an unavailable dependency resolvable. See the goimports package documentation.
Capture the exact diagnostic, the file being edited, the Go and goimports versions, and relevant go env values. Then check the desired import path against the dependency’s module directive in its go.mod. Establish whether the package belongs to the current module, another local checkout, or a remote private module. The error text and the environment determine the right fix.
| Symptom | First checks | Likely area |
|---|---|---|
| Import is sorted into the wrong section | Check the import path and any -local prefixes. |
goimports grouping |
| A package in a sibling checkout cannot be found | Check its go.mod module path, workspace root, and go.work membership. |
Local module visibility |
| A private dependency lookup fails or contacts public services | Check GOPRIVATE, GONOPROXY, GONOSUMDB, GOPROXY, credentials, and fallback behavior. |
Private module download policy |
| The terminal succeeds but the editor fails | Compare the executable, working directory, environment, and workspace context used by each. | Editor integration |
For local modules, connect the checkouts
When you are developing multiple local modules together, a Go workspace lets them participate in one logical build. From a suitable common parent directory, initialize or update the workspace and add each module:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
go work init
go work use path/to/module-a path/to/module-b
If a go.work already exists, run go work use for each module path rather than creating another workspace. Open the workspace root in your editor so Go tooling, including gopls, sees the intended workspace. The gopls workspace guide explains how a workspace includes modules in a shared development build and informs the language server which modules are in use.
A workspace does not correct a wrong import path or module declaration: verify that the import path corresponds to the package’s declared module and package location.

When a local replacement is a better fit
For a temporary, dependency-specific substitution, a replace directive in the applicable go.mod can redirect a module to a local directory. A replacement redirects a dependency; a workspace brings multiple local modules into the shared development context. Confirm the directive is in the module being built and targets the intended dependency. Neither mechanism is interchangeable with -local.
For private remote modules, match Go’s fetch policy to your organization
Direct access to private repositories
If Go should fetch private modules directly from version control, set GOPRIVATE to the private module path prefix or pattern, for example:

go env -w GOPRIVATE=git.example.com/team
GOPRIVATE tells the Go command that matching module paths are private. By default, it also supplies the matching behavior for GONOPROXY and GONOSUMDB, avoiding the public module proxy and checksum database for those paths. It does not provide credentials or grant repository access: confirm that the machine or editor process can authenticate to the source-control host. The Go Modules Reference documents these settings.
When your company provides a module proxy
Use the GOPROXY, bypass, and checksum settings specified by your organization. Do not assume the direct-VCS example is appropriate when policy requires a private proxy. Go can try proxy URLs in order, but the separator changes when it falls back:

- With comma-separated entries, Go proceeds to the next proxy for HTTP 404 or 410 responses.
- With pipe-separated entries, Go proceeds regardless of the HTTP error status.
That distinction matters for privacy. If a private proxy returns 404 and a public proxy follows it in a comma-separated list, Go may send the private module path to that public proxy. Set GONOPROXY and GONOSUMDB deliberately if they need to differ from the defaults inherited from GOPRIVATE. The Go project’s dependency management guidance describes proxy behavior and dependency configuration.
Avoid using GOSUMDB=off as a catch-all workaround. Disabling checksum verification globally gives up integrity protection for modules not already known to the checksum database. Prefer targeted private-path settings such as GOPRIVATE or GONOSUMDB when they fit your organization’s policy.

Use -local only to group imports
For imports that should appear after third-party imports, pass the relevant local prefix:
goimports -local=example.com/company -w path/to/file.go
The -local flag affects where matching imports appear in import sections; it does not discover packages, add a module to a workspace, repair an import path, supply credentials, or configure a proxy. The flag’s behavior is defined in the goimports source.
Quick Recap
Verify the fix in the same environment
- From the intended module or workspace root, use a module-aware Go command such as
go listfor the package that fails. If appropriate, rungo test ./...for the relevant module. - Retry goimports using the same environment as the editor. If command-line Go succeeds but the editor still fails, compare the editor’s Go executable, working directory, process environment, and opened workspace root.
- Recheck the original diagnostic. A successful module lookup addresses dependency visibility or fetching; an import-order change addresses grouping. Do not treat one as proof that the other is fixed.
