Let Prettier own code formatting and use ESLint for code-quality rules. In a project that uses both, add eslint-config-prettier to disable ESLint rules that overlap with or conflict with Prettier, then run Prettier separately to format files and check them in CI.
Why Prettier and ESLint disagree
Prettier rewrites code to match its formatting rules. ESLint can also enforce stylistic rules, so both tools may try to control details such as spacing or line breaks. If their rules differ, you can see contradictory diagnostics or repeated changes when formatting and linting run in sequence.
Prettier’s guidance is to use it for formatting and linters for code-quality concerns. That division gives each tool a clear job instead of maintaining two sets of formatting rules. See Prettier’s guidance on integrating with linters.
Resolve the conflict with a separate formatter and linter
- Install Prettier and
eslint-config-prettierin the project. Follow the current Prettier installation guidance for your package manager and project. - Configure
eslint-config-prettierfor your ESLint setup. Its purpose is to turn off ESLint rules that are unnecessary when Prettier formats the code or that might conflict with Prettier. Configuration syntax varies with the ESLint configuration style and package versions, so use the package’s current instructions rather than copying a configuration intended for a different setup. - Keep ESLint focused on code-quality diagnostics. Remove or disable overlapping formatting rules instead of repeatedly adjusting both tools to win the same formatting disagreement.
- Format files with Prettier. Run
prettier --writeon the files you want to format. This command changes them. - Check formatting without changing files. Run
prettier --checkin CI or another verification step. It reports files that need formatting without overwriting them and exits with code 1 when changes are needed. See the Prettier CLI documentation.
Choose between the Prettier config and plugin
These packages do different jobs: eslint-config-prettier disables overlapping ESLint rules, while eslint-plugin-prettier runs Prettier through ESLint and reports formatting differences as lint issues. For ordinary projects, Prettier recommends invoking the formatter directly rather than embedding it in ESLint.

| Approach | What it does | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
eslint-config-prettier with standalone Prettier |
Turns off conflicting or unnecessary ESLint rules; Prettier formats and checks files separately. | Keeps formatting and linting as separate tasks, following Prettier’s recommended division of responsibilities. |
eslint-plugin-prettier |
Runs Prettier as an ESLint rule and reports formatting differences as lint issues. | Prettier notes that this can produce many editor squiggles, run more slowly than invoking Prettier directly, and add another layer where failures can occur. |
Use the plugin only when reporting formatting differences as ESLint diagnostics is a deliberate project choice. Prettier describes the trade-offs in its integration guidance.
Make formatting consistent across contributors
Pin a local Prettier version
Install Prettier locally and keep its version exact in the project. Prettier notes that even patch releases can produce different formatting, so a consistent local version helps prevent contributors from reformatting one another’s changes with different releases. Local installation also helps editor integrations use the project’s version. See Prettier’s installation guidance.

Check which configuration applies to a file
Prettier searches upward from the directory of the file being formatted to find configuration. It does not support global configuration. If files in different directories format differently, check the configuration scope and confirm that each file resolves to the intended project config. The configuration documentation explains supported config files and lookup behavior.

Troubleshoot a conflict that persists
- Different results between terminal and editor: Confirm that both are using the project’s local Prettier version, not an unrelated editor-installed version.
- Different results in different folders: Check which Prettier configuration applies to each file, accounting for the upward search from its directory.
- ESLint still flags formatting: Verify that
eslint-config-prettieris configured for the project’s ESLint setup and that the conflicting rule is disabled. - One tool appears to undo the other: Confirm both commands target the same file and project configuration. Run
prettier --write, then runprettier --checkand the project’s ESLint command independently to identify which tool reports the remaining issue.
