To make a VMware Workstation guest display grow with its console, choose View > Autosize > Autofit Guest, then resize the Workstation window. This changes the guest operating system’s resolution; it requires VMware Tools to be running. If you only want the image to look larger without changing resolution, use Stretch Guest where available instead.
Choose between changing resolution and scaling the image
Increasing the guest’s resolution gives its desktop more pixels and lets it show more content. Scaling enlarges or fits the existing image without giving the guest more pixels. Workstation has separate controls for those outcomes, so choose the one that matches what you need.
| Control | What it changes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Autofit Guest | Guest resolution follows the console size. | You want the guest desktop to gain or lose resolution as you resize the Workstation window. |
| Autofit Window | The console follows the guest’s selected resolution. | You want the Workstation window to adapt to a resolution set inside the guest. |
| Fit Guest Now | Adjusts guest resolution to the current console size once. | You want a one-time guest display adjustment. |
| Fit Window Now | Adjusts the console to the guest’s current display size once. | You want a one-time window adjustment to fit the existing guest resolution. |
| Stretch Guest | Fits the guest image to the available area without changing its resolution. | You want visual scaling; the cited Workstation Pro 15.0 guide identifies this option for Linux hosts. |
The control descriptions come from the Workstation Pro 15.0 user guide. Menu wording or availability may vary in other releases.

Make the guest resolution follow the Workstation window
- Start the virtual machine and confirm that VMware Tools is installed and running in the guest operating system.
- In Workstation, select View > Autosize > Autofit Guest.
- Resize the Workstation console window. The guest display resolution should adjust to match it.
- To apply the current console dimensions immediately, select View > Fit Guest Now.
VMware’s guide states that VMware Tools must be running for Autofit Guest and Fit Guest Now. See Using VMware Workstation Pro.

Make the window follow a resolution chosen in the guest
If you set a resolution inside the guest and want the Workstation console to fit it, use View > Autosize > Autofit Window. To resize the console just once to the guest’s current display dimensions, select View > Fit Window Now. These options change the window, not the guest’s chosen resolution.
If the guest display does not resize
Check VMware Tools first
Confirm that the appropriate VMware Tools are installed and running in the guest. The Workstation guide identifies this as a requirement for Autofit Guest and Fit Guest Now. Broadcom’s VMware Tools overview also lists low video resolution among issues that installing VMware Tools can improve or eliminate.

Distinguish a resizing failure from a resolution limit
If the guest changes size with the window but cannot offer a higher resolution, the limitation may be the guest’s supported display modes or the virtual hardware—not Autofit Guest itself. For current versions of Workstation, Fusion, and Player, Broadcom recommends automatic video-memory detection with svga.autodetect = "TRUE". Its article on adding video resolution modes to Windows guests says supported modes are constrained by virtual hardware. Do not treat a custom resolution setting as a substitute for checking the guest and virtual hardware limits.
Account for Linux display modes
On Linux guests, resizing can also depend on the display system and the modes defined in the guest. The Workstation Pro 15.0 guide notes that VMware Tools and guest-defined display modes affect Linux resizing. If a particular size is unavailable, check which display modes the guest exposes.

Treat older resolution ceilings as version-specific
A Broadcom article documents a maximum of 2560×1920 for the VMware SVGA 3D driver included with VMware Tools in Workstation 11 for Windows guests. That is a legacy Workstation 11 limitation, not a general maximum for current releases. The article recommends upgrading the tools or Workstation version: Unable to increase the screen resolution in a Workstation virtual machine.

Disabling Tools-driven display-mode changes is a specialized workaround, not a way to enlarge the screen. Broadcom documents guestInfo.svga.wddm.modeset="FALSE" for Workstation 17.5x with VMTools 10.2.5 or newer; the article also notes that Group Policy changes might be needed. Because this prevents automatic resolution setting, it is not appropriate when your goal is to have the guest follow the console. See Broadcom’s instructions for disabling display resolution setting through VMware Tools.
