Resizing a Windows VM disk takes two separate actions: increase the virtual or managed disk’s capacity on its platform, then extend the Windows partition or volume so the guest can use the added space. The steps depend on whether the VM uses a Hyper-V VHD/VHDX or an Azure managed disk; neither platform’s procedure applies to every hypervisor or cloud.
Choose the procedure for your VM platform

Expand a Hyper-V VHD or VHDX
Check the disk and VM first
- Confirm the disk path and whether the file is VHD or VHDX.
- Check whether the VM attaches the disk through an IDE or SCSI chain. Microsoft says SCSI-attached disks can be resized while the VM is online; IDE-attached disks cannot.
- Make sure you have an appropriate backup or recovery path before changing the disk.
Run Resize-VHD
Microsoft documents Resize-VHD for changing a Hyper-V virtual disk’s maximum size. For example, the command shape is:
Resize-VHD -Path C:VMsexample.vhdx -SizeBytes 40GBReplace the example path and requested size with values appropriate for the actual disk. This is an illustrative command, not a tested command for your VM. The cmdlet expands VHD and VHDX files, but can shrink only VHDX files; a shrink cannot go below that disk’s minimum size. After the platform-side change, inspect the disk and partition state inside Windows. The guest may need a separate volume extension before the new capacity is usable.
Do not confuse resizing with reclaiming space
Resizing is not the same as removing unused blocks from a dynamically expanding disk. Microsoft Learn states: “Resize-VHD does not remove empty blocks from a dynamically-expanding virtual hard disk file. Use Optimize-VHD instead.” Follow the Hyper-V documentation for the distinct space-reclamation operation.

Resize an Azure managed disk and extend it in Windows
Increase the managed disk capacity
Azure’s Windows VM workflow supports resizing OS and data disks through the portal or Azure PowerShell. Check the current requirements for the particular disk and VM: whether the VM must be deallocated depends on disk type, VM support, and whether the disk is an OS or data disk. A shared disk cannot be live-resized while it remains attached to running VMs. Microsoft’s Azure Windows VM expansion guide describes the platform-side process and its eligibility conditions.
Extend the Windows volume
Once the Azure disk capacity has increased, connect to the VM and extend the target volume into the available space. In Windows, use Disk Management’s Extend Volume operation, or use DiskPart to select the volume and run extend. Follow Microsoft’s Windows VM instructions for the applicable guest workflow. Increasing managed-disk capacity alone does not automatically make that space part of a Windows volume.

When Windows cannot extend the volume
Do not delete or convert partitions just because the extension option is unavailable. First inspect the partition layout, file system, disk type, and recovery path. Microsoft lists several causes that can prevent an extension:
- No adjacent unallocated space: Windows can extend a volume only into adjacent unallocated space. A recovery partition between the target volume and the free space can block the operation.
- MBR partition style: MBR has a 2 TiB partition limit; GPT avoids this particular limitation. This is a partition-style constraint, distinct from a platform’s managed-disk capacity limit.
- NTFS allocation-unit size: The maximum volume capacity varies with allocation-unit size.
- Encryption-related layout: In some custom-image scenarios, Azure Disk Encryption can leave a System Reserved partition after the OS volume, affecting whether the volume can be extended.
- SQL Server VM storage pools: Some Azure Marketplace SQL Server VMs use storage pools that prevent the standard volume-extension workflow.
Microsoft’s Azure Windows VM troubleshooting guidance covers these layout-related cases and recommends taking a snapshot of the OS disk before its described partition-remediation procedure. Use remediation steps only after confirming they match your VM’s layout and recovery plan.

Identify which stage failed
A platform-side resize error and a Windows guest-side extension error are different problems. Azure maintains separate troubleshooting paths for these stages, including guidance for symptoms such as a disabled Extend Volume command. Use Microsoft’s guest-side troubleshooting article when the disk grew in Azure but Windows cannot extend the volume; consult the platform workflow when the managed-disk resize itself failed.
