To reset an iPad’s preferences without deleting photos, apps, documents, or other personal content, use Reset All Settings—not Erase All Content and Settings. In current iPadOS, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. Apple says this restores settings to their defaults while keeping data and media. Menu wording or available choices can vary by iPadOS version and device management configuration.
Reset all settings without deleting your content
Before starting, consider backing up the iPad’s settings if you might want to restore your previous configuration. Then follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset All Settings and follow any on-screen prompts.
Apple’s iPad User Guide describes this as returning settings to their defaults without erasing content. Do not select Erase All Content and Settings if you want to keep your personal content: that separate option removes personal information, content, and settings and restores factory settings.

Apple says the reset removes or returns settings such as network settings, the keyboard dictionary, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards to defaults. It does not delete data or media. You may need to revisit preferences and reconnect to services afterward; this is not a guarantee that every app or service will be ready exactly as it was before.

Choose a narrower reset when it fits the problem
The Reset menu includes more targeted choices. Use the one that matches the issue, and check its consequences before confirming.

Managed iPads and profile-installed network settings
Network settings installed by a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) may need separate handling. Apple lists Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for profile management. Removing a profile or management can also remove associated settings, accounts, or certificates. If the iPad belongs to a school or employer, check with its administrator before changing or removing management settings.
What to try before resetting all settings
For Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or another system-feature problem, restart the iPad first. Apple says a full settings reset can help when incorrect or damaged settings are causing the issue, but is rarely necessary. If a restart does not help and the problem appears related to device preferences, Reset All Settings is the broader next step.
