Windows has no single documented button to reset every keyboard setting. First identify what changed: choose the intended input layout for wrong characters, review Accessibility keyboard options for unexpected key behavior, or change the On-Screen Keyboard’s own layout if that is what looks different.
These are separate settings, so change only the one relevant to the symptom. The paths differ slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Find the setting that matches the problem
| Symptom | Likely setting or issue | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong letters or punctuation | Active keyboard layout | Choose a layout from the taskbar input indicator or press Windows+Space |
| Ctrl or Alt behavior changed | Sticky Keys or another Accessibility option | Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard; Windows 10: Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard |
| Brief or repeated key presses are ignored | Filter Keys | Review keyboard options in Accessibility or Ease of Access |
| On-Screen Keyboard shows Nav instead of a full keyboard | On-Screen Keyboard layout | Select General on the On-Screen Keyboard |
| A key is cracked, missing, or damaged | Possible hardware fault | Check the keyboard or device maker’s support guidance |
Choose the correct keyboard layout
If Windows types the wrong characters or punctuation, first switch to the layout you intended to use. Select the input language icon in the taskbar and choose a layout, or press Windows+Space to cycle through installed layouts. If no layout menu appears, only one layout may be installed.
To remove a layout you no longer need:
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the options for the relevant language.
- Under Keyboards, remove the unwanted layout.
- Check other language entries if you do not see the layout where expected; it may be listed under a different language.
If Remove is unavailable because the layout is the only one for that language, add the layout you want before removing the other one. Windows 10 builds may show a shorter Settings > Time & language > Language path; follow the labels on your screen.

- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.

Changing the keyboard layout changes the characters entered, not the Windows display language. Check the active layout at the sign-in screen too if characters seem wrong while entering a password.
Review Accessibility keyboard options
Sticky Keys and Filter Keys can change how Windows interprets key presses. Microsoft Support explains: “If Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or other Keyboard settings are altered, they may change how your Keyboard works.”
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. In Windows 10, open Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
- Review Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, Toggle Keys, and other keyboard options.
- Turn off features you do not want, or restore the settings you prefer. Check shortcut options if you keep enabling a feature accidentally.
Sticky Keys lets you enter multi-key commands such as Ctrl+S one key at a time. Filter Keys can make Windows ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. Toggle Keys provides feedback when lock keys change state.
Change the On-Screen Keyboard layout
The On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) has its own layout, separate from the physical keyboard’s input layout. If the OSK shows its Nav layout instead of the full keyboard, select General on the OSK. Select Nav to return to that layout.

When a setting change will not help
A broken, cracked, or missing key may indicate a hardware fault rather than a Windows setting problem. Microsoft’s guidance about service applies specifically to Surface keyboards and Type Covers; for another keyboard, consult its maker’s support guidance.

If the problem is a key that produces the wrong character, check the active layout before assuming the keyboard is damaged. If only the On-Screen Keyboard looks different, change its layout rather than the physical keyboard’s input language.
Is there a command that resets every keyboard setting?
The Microsoft guidance reviewed documents controls for individual settings, not one command that resets every keyboard preference. Identify the symptom and use the matching Windows Settings control instead of changing unrelated settings.
