Windows 11 does not provide one universal reset button for every sound property. To restore working audio, correct the setting that matches the problem: select the right device, check volume and mute, turn off troublesome enhancements, or test a different audio format. If the device is missing—or sound failed after an update—move on to troubleshooting or driver checks rather than repeatedly changing sound settings.

Start with the symptom and the device

First identify whether the issue is no sound, low or distorted sound, a missing output device, playback from only one app, or a microphone that is not working. Windows can list several output devices, and selecting the wrong one can make audio seem broken even when the device itself is fine.

Symptom First checks If the problem continues
No sound or sound from the wrong device Output selection, mute, system and app volume, and whether the device is enabled Run the Audio troubleshooter; then check drivers or audio services. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide
Quiet or distorted sound System and app volume, enhancements, and default format Update or reinstall the appropriate audio driver. Microsoft’s guide to low or quiet sound and guide to distorted or crackling audio
Output device missing Check device detection and enablement in Device Manager Show hidden devices, scan for hardware changes, install the device maker’s appropriate driver, and restart. Microsoft’s missing-device guide
Microphone not working Select and test the input device; check mute and microphone permissions Run input troubleshooting and investigate drivers if Windows does not detect the microphone. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide

Restore the basic output settings

Select the output device

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you are actually using.
  3. Play audio to test the selection. If Windows lists several devices, try the intended device rather than assuming the current selection is correct.

Check volume and mute

  1. In Settings > System > Sound, open Volume mixer.
  2. Check the system volume and the level for the affected app. Make sure neither is muted or set too low.
  3. Test playback again. System volume and an individual app’s volume are separate controls, so check both.

Turn off enhancements or test another format

Test with audio enhancements off

Select your output device in Settings > System > Sound, find Audio enhancements, and turn them off. Test audio before changing anything else. Microsoft notes that “Sometimes having audio enhancements on can result in audio issues.” Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide

Try a different default format

If sound is still poor, open More sound settings under the Advanced sound options. In the relevant playback device’s properties, look for the default format and test another available option. Change one setting at a time and listen after each change; trying another format is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed reset.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Audio and select Run.
  3. Follow the prompts and test sound when troubleshooting finishes.

If the output device is missing

A missing device is more likely a detection, enablement, or driver issue than a setting that can be fixed by resetting volume or enhancements.

Check microphone permissions separately

Speaker output settings do not control whether apps can access a microphone. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and confirm microphone access and access for the relevant app are enabled. Then return to Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the microphone, and test it. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide

When to check audio services or drivers

If the simpler checks do not help, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services. If audio stopped working after a Windows update, rolling back the audio driver may help. These are escalation steps, not the first things to change when the wrong device, mute state, or app level may be the cause. Use the appropriate driver from the device manufacturer when Windows is missing or using an incompatible audio driver. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide
