To change an app execution alias in Windows 11, open Manage app execution aliases from Start, then switch the entry for the command you are troubleshooting on or off. For a Python command that opens the Microsoft Store, turn off the App Installer Python entries, then reopen your terminal and check command resolution.
Open the app execution aliases page
- Open Start and search for Manage app execution aliases.
- Select the matching Settings result. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings > App execution aliases, if that route appears on your Windows 11 version.
The page has separate controls for individual aliases. Change only the entry associated with the command you are troubleshooting; this is not a single global reset switch.
Stop the Microsoft Store redirect for Python
- On the aliases page, find the App Installer entries for Python.
- Switch off the relevant Python entries to disable those shortcuts.
- Close and reopen Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal, then try the command again.
Microsoft documents disabling the App Installer Python shortcuts as a way to prevent the Store redirect. If you installed Python from python.org and want its python command to take priority, Microsoft’s guidance is to select Add to PATH in the Python installer. Check command resolution if the alias change did not help
Turning off a shortcut does not install Python or repair an existing installation. If the command still does not run as expected, check that Python is installed and that the intended installation is available through PATH. The alias toggle controls command routing; it does not fix a missing or incorrectly configured Python installation.

App Reset is different from resetting an alias
Windows also has a Reset control under an individual app’s Advanced options. That option resets the app to its default state and may remove app data; it is not documented as a global reset for execution aliases. Microsoft advises trying Repair first when available, then considering Reset if Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the problem. Not every app offers these options. Windows labels and Settings navigation can vary after updates. Searching Start for Manage app execution aliases is a direct way to find the page when the breadcrumb differs.
