To reset an old Chromecast, first identify its generation: button timing and LED cues differ across models. A factory reset erases the device’s settings and data and cannot be undone, so try power, HDMI, and network checks first. The original Chromecast (1st gen) no longer receives Google software or security updates, and resetting it will not restore support.
Identify your Chromecast before resetting it
Check the device and its setup in Google Home to determine the model. The reset instructions are not interchangeable: the first-generation Chromecast has a longer button procedure, while later models use different LED cues. Google’s factory-reset guide lists the current steps for each model.
A factory reset returns the Chromecast to its factory settings and clears its data. Google says the action cannot be undone. It does not promise to repair damaged hardware, restore discontinued support, or make an incompatible app work again.

Choose the reset method for your model
Chromecast (1st gen)
If the Chromecast is still on the network used for setup, Google Home can reset it. Otherwise, use the device button: with the Chromecast powered, hold the button for at least 25 seconds or until the solid LED flashes red. Release after the LED blinks white and the TV goes blank. Check Google’s current instructions for your exact model before proceeding.

Chromecast (2nd gen), Chromecast (3rd gen), and Chromecast Ultra
Google Home can reset these models if your phone is connected to the same network that was used to set up the Chromecast. For an on-device reset, keep the Chromecast powered and hold its side button. Google’s cue is an orange blinking LED followed by a solid white LED; release when it turns solid white.
Chromecast with Google TV
Using the remote, open Profile → All settings → System → About → Factory reset. You can also reset from the device button: keep the device powered, hold the button while watching the LED, and release when it becomes solid white, following Google’s model-specific instructions.

Reconnect after a Wi-Fi change
Google says Chromecast remembers one Wi-Fi network at a time. If it has lost access to the old network, reset it and set it up again on the new one. If it is still connected to the existing network, use Google Home to forget that network before setting up the Chromecast on the new one. See Google’s instructions for changing the Wi-Fi network.

If the first-generation model shows “Reconnect me,” Google recommends a troubleshooting sequence that includes disconnecting the Chromecast from HDMI and power, attaching the HDMI extender supplied with the device, then reconnecting power. Google says the included extender may reduce Wi-Fi signal interference; it is not a guaranteed fix for every connection problem. Follow Google’s Reconnect me troubleshooting steps.

Check a black screen or “no signal” before erasing settings
A black screen or failed cast does not by itself mean the Chromecast needs a factory reset. First check that it has power and that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input. Then use Google’s no-signal and black-screen troubleshooting guide for the relevant model. Reset only if the model-specific troubleshooting points to it or you are ready to erase the device’s settings.
Know what a reset cannot fix
Google says support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended: it no longer receives software or security updates, and Google does not provide technical support for it. A reset cannot change that status. This statement is specific to the first-generation model; it should not be generalized to every Chromecast. Google’s Chromecast history blog says support policy for existing devices has not changed and that the latest devices continue to receive software and security updates.

When to move on from the old device
If the Chromecast remains unusable after reasonable power, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and model-specific checks, Google identifies Google TV Streamer as the device that replaces Chromecast. Whether it is the right next step depends on current availability, your budget, and whether you want a remote and on-screen interface instead of the older casting-focused experience.
