To factory reset a Kids’ Fire tablet that opens normally, swipe down twice from the top of the screen, tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults, then confirm. If Settings is unavailable, Amazon documents a Recovery Mode reset for most Fire tablets. Either method removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, and deregisters the tablet from your Amazon account.
Before you reset the tablet
- A reset erases downloaded content from the device, including in-app purchases. Amazon says the tablet is deregistered from your account; register it again before using it. The reset instructions do not say that purchases are erased from your Amazon account. Amazon’s factory-reset guidance
- If the tablet has expandable storage, safely eject the card if needed before resetting.
- A device reset is separate from deleting a child profile from your Amazon account. Amazon says child profiles can be managed on the device or through Parent Dashboard; removing a profile through Parent Dashboard makes it unavailable on Amazon Kids-compatible devices. Reset from Settings
- Swipe down twice from the top edge of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device Options, then Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Confirm the reset when prompted and allow the tablet to complete the process.
Afterward, the device is returned to factory settings and deregistered. Register it again to use it. Amazon’s factory-reset instructions
Reset with Recovery Mode if Settings will not open
Use Recovery Mode if the tablet is frozen or you cannot reach Settings. Amazon gives this button combination for most Fire tablets, not every model:

- Press and hold Power + Volume Down until Recovery Mode appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press the Power button to select it.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
This also removes downloaded content and deregisters the tablet. If the button combination does not open Recovery Mode, check the guide for your specific model: Amazon’s Fire Tablet Help page links to model-specific guides. The full Recovery Mode instructions are published by Amazon.

If you forgot the parental-controls password
Amazon says a forgotten parental-controls password requires a factory reset to restore full access. Do not assume this is the same as forgetting a lock-screen password: Amazon’s guidance addresses parental controls specifically. For children under 13, Amazon directs parents to child-profile settings rather than treating the profile as an adult profile with parental controls. Child-profile options include age filters, content sharing, store access, web-history review, camera access, volume limits and an optional child lock-screen PIN. After the reset: register and review the child setup
Register the tablet again with the Amazon account before using it. Then review the child’s setup rather than assuming every preference will return automatically. Amazon documents ways to manage child-profile preferences and content on the device and remotely through Parent Dashboard, but does not specify exactly which child-profile settings or cloud-synced information will be restored when a reset tablet is registered again. Recheck the options important to your family, such as age filters, access to shared content, store access, web-history review, camera access, volume limits and the child lock-screen PIN.
