To assess a Chinese EV maker’s financial health, start with its latest official annual and interim filings—not an undated cash figure or earnings-release headline. Compare several reporting periods, reconcile cash flow with profit, separate usable cash from restricted balances and investments, then estimate runway only under clearly stated burn and liquidity assumptions.

Find the latest official filings first

Use the issuer’s investor-relations reports page to locate its latest annual report and most recent interim or quarterly report. Confirm both the period end and publication date, and cross-check filings through the relevant market regulator or exchange: SEC filings for a U.S.-listed issuer and HKEX announcements for a Hong Kong-listed issuer. An issuer-hosted copy is convenient, but the filing date and complete filing matter. SAIC Motor’s financial-data page is one example of an official source listing financial data and reports.

Read the management discussion together with the consolidated financial statements and notes. A results release can help you locate key information, but it does not replace the full filing. For example, XPENG’s 2025 annual report covers the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, and was filed April 16, 2026.

Before comparing figures, note the reporting currency, accounting period, consolidation perimeter, and whether a balance is unrestricted, restricted, or invested. Keep dates aligned: a year-end balance and a later-period cash-flow figure describe different points or spans of time.

Build a period-by-period financial picture

For at least three annual periods and the latest interim period, where available, capture the following from the statements and their notes. Include the reporting date and currency in your working table; explain when the issuer presents a category differently or does not disclose it separately.

  • Liquidity: cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash, short-term investments, and other liquid investments. Check access restrictions and investment maturities.
  • Cash movement: net cash from or used in operating, investing, and financing activities, plus the net change in cash.
  • Operating performance: revenue, gross profit and margin, operating result, and net result.
  • Investment needs: capital expenditure, research and development spending, and material investment commitments.
  • Working capital: current assets and liabilities, including receivables, inventory, and trade payables.
  • Debt and other obligations: short- and long-term borrowings, current maturities, leases, interest costs, and repayment dates.
  • Financing: equity issuance, new borrowing, repayments, and other material financing sources.

Cash flow is not the same as profit. Trace the reconciliation from net income to operating cash flow, including non-cash items and working-capital changes. Li Auto’s 2026 Form 20-F reported net cash used in operations of RMB 8.6 billion in 2025, compared with cash provided by operations of RMB 50.7 billion in 2023 and RMB 15.9 billion in 2024; its filing discusses payable and inventory movements among the contributors to the difference between net income and operating cash flow. Separate cash from liquidity the company can actually use

Do not treat every balance described as cash or cash resources as immediately spendable. Show cash and cash equivalents separately from restricted cash, short-term investments, long-term deposits, and available borrowing. For investments, check maturity and access terms in the notes; for borrowing capacity, distinguish an existing facility from financing the company may need to obtain.

For instance, XPENG reported RMB 21.163 billion of cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash at June 30, 2026. That combined figure should not be read as unrestricted cash: consult its interim filing and notes to identify the restricted portion and other liquidity details. The same filing reported net cash used in operating activities of RMB 11.725 billion for the six months ended that date. XPENG interim filings

NIO’s 2026 results release reported RMB 45.9 billion at December 31, 2025, across cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash, short-term investments, and long-term time deposits. Those categories have different liquidity characteristics, so retain the breakdown rather than treating the total as cash on hand. NIO results releases

Estimate runway as a scenario, not a disclosed fact

A simple calculation is:

Estimated runway in months = usable liquidity ÷ assumed monthly net cash burn

Define both inputs before calculating. Usable liquidity should exclude restricted or inaccessible amounts and state whether it includes investments. For burn, say whether you use operating cash flow alone or include investment spending, identify the measurement period, and explain how you converted a quarterly or annual figure to a monthly rate. Do not present the result as a company-specific fact unless management explicitly states its own horizon.

Use base, downside, and stress scenarios when the filings support them. The estimate may be uninformative if cash flow is positive, highly seasonal, or unusually affected by working capital or financing; dividing liquidity by a burn figure in those conditions can create false precision. Cross-check any scenario against debt maturities, lease obligations, capital commitments, expected factory and R&D spending, and the company’s access to financing.

XPENG’s interim filing describes the company’s funding dependencies this way: “The Group’s liquidity is based on its ability to enhance its operating cash flow position, obtain capital financing from equity interest investors and borrow funds to fund its general operations, research and development activities and capital expenditures.” This is management’s description of what liquidity depends on, not independent assurance that funding will be available. Judge financial health across several dimensions

No single balance or ratio settles whether an EV maker is financially healthy. Compare like periods and definitions, then assess these areas together:

  • Liquidity coverage: compare unrestricted liquidity with current liabilities and scheduled debt; show restricted cash separately.
  • Cash-flow direction: track operating cash flow, investment needs, financing inflows, and net cash changes across periods.
  • Cash conversion: reconcile operating cash flow with earnings and inspect receivables, inventory, and payables.
  • Underlying economics: consider revenue scale, gross margin, operating result, and whether losses are narrowing for repeatable reasons.
  • Capital intensity: account for factories and equipment, R&D, charging or service-network investment, and commitments.
  • Funding resilience: examine maturities, refinancing requirements, equity and debt issuance, and stated access to credit.

NIO’s 2026 results release illustrates why these measures belong together: at December 31, 2025, the company reported current liabilities above current assets, while management said it believed its resources would support ordinary-course operations for the following twelve months, subject to its business plan and uncertainties. A management outlook is not the same as an independently verified runway, and current liabilities alone do not establish insolvency. NIO results release

For another scope reminder, SAIC Motor’s official financial-data page reported January–June 2026 revenue of RMB 298.652 billion and operating cash flow of RMB 54.303 billion. These are company-wide automaker figures, not EV-only segment measures. SAIC Motor financial data

Do not rank one issuer as safer just because its cash balance is larger. Adjust for company scale, restrictions, obligations, reporting date, and business model. Keep disclosed facts, management statements, and your own inferences distinct; a positive quarter or a stated twelve-month outlook does not by itself establish a durable trend.
