If a deepfake video shows you in an intimate or sexual situation without your consent, report it to the platform as non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). Save the post’s URL and your report confirmation, but you do not need to download or share the video to request removal. In the United States, covered platforms have had a federal process and a 48-hour removal duty for valid requests under the TAKE IT DOWN Act since May 19, 2026. Rules elsewhere depend on your country and the service.
1. Save the post details before reporting
Record the exact URL of the video or post, the account or channel name, the platform, and the date you found it. Keep the report confirmation number and relevant messages. These details can help you follow up if the platform does not act.
You do not need to download or redistribute an intimate video to report it. Avoid forwarding it to friends or posting it elsewhere; use the platform’s reporting form and provide the identifying details it requests.
2. Use the platform’s intimate-image reporting route
If the deepfake is intimate and shared without your consent, choose the platform’s category for non-consensual intimate imagery, intimate-image abuse, or the closest equivalent. A video being synthetic does not by itself make an intimate-image report irrelevant. Each service has its own process, so use its current help or safety page rather than assuming that another platform’s form or rules apply.

YouTube describes multiple ways to report NCII, including a route connected to the U.S. TAKE IT DOWN Act. Follow the current instructions on YouTube’s NCII reporting page; the available route may depend on your situation.
Other platforms
Look in the service’s help or safety center for “non-consensual intimate imagery,” “intimate image abuse,” or “sexual content shared without consent.” If the service has no dedicated option, use its general report form and explain that the video is an intimate deepfake posted without your consent. Include the URL and account name, and save the confirmation.

3. What U.S. platforms must do under the TAKE IT DOWN Act
For covered platforms, the Act’s platform requirements began on May 19, 2026. After receiving a valid removal request, a covered platform must remove covered intimate imagery and known identical copies within 48 hours. The duty is not a worldwide deadline, and it does not mean every platform or every report is covered. See the FTC’s compliance guidance and the text of 47 U.S.C. § 223a for the U.S. framework.

If the platform asks you to verify details, respond through its official channel. Keep the confirmation and note when you submitted the request so you can follow up on a missed deadline.

4. If a covered U.S. platform does not act
If a covered platform lacks a removal process, its process is broken, or it fails to act on a valid request, you can report the issue to the FTC. The FTC’s platform complaint process concerns compliance with the Act; submitting a complaint is not a guarantee that your specific video will be removed immediately. Keep your original platform report details to hand when making the complaint.
5. Reduce the chance of matching copies resurfacing
Reporting a post asks the host platform to address that specific content. Hash-matching services are a separate measure: they create a digital fingerprint to help participating services identify matching copies. Use the age-appropriate service, and treat it as a complement to reporting the original post—not a substitute. Participation varies, and altered versions are not guaranteed to match.

- If the person depicted is an adult: FTC guidance points to StopNCII.org.
Neither service is a universal removal button: the method is intended to help participating services find matching material.

Removal rights, criminal rules, platform duties, and deadlines vary by country. Do not assume the U.S. 48-hour requirement applies where you live. For example, a UK Government factsheet published in September 2026 describes separate UK measures, including a 48-hour outer limit within its framework; its scope and legal status for your situation should be checked against the UK Government intimate image abuse factsheet. For another country, consult the relevant local authority or support organization and the platform’s local reporting route.

7. Get urgent support for minors, threats, or extortion
If the material depicts a minor, contact the relevant child-safety service and a trusted adult or support organization. If someone is threatening you, demanding money, or using the video to coerce you, preserve the messages and contact local law enforcement or a specialist support service. Do not pay or send more material based only on a threat; seek help through a trusted local channel.
