If a school shooting threat may signal immediate danger, call 911 first. For a concerning post without a known immediate emergency, promptly notify local law enforcement and the school, and you can also submit a tip to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov. Save identifying details, but do not repost or forward the threat. You do not have to decide whether it is credible before reporting it.
Choose the right reporting route

If you are unsure whether danger is immediate, share what you know with emergency services or local law enforcement rather than trying to investigate or assess the threat yourself. Local reporting channels and school procedures can vary.
How to report a threatening post
- Call 911 first if there may be immediate danger. An online form is not an emergency response channel.
- Alert the school and local law enforcement promptly. Use the school’s established safety or administrative contact route. If reporting to the FBI as well, use tips.fbi.gov or contact the FBI; do not submit the same FBI tip more than once.
- Preserve the evidence. Keep the original post available and capture or copy it. Record the platform, post URL or internet address, account or username, and date and time if visible. Give these details to authorities. [FBI tip form]
- Do not circulate the post. Do not repost it, forward it, or publish it as a warning. Broadly sharing unverified material can spread misinformation and cause panic. The U.S. Department of Education’s September 25, 2026 institutional guidance calls this approach “Report, Don’t Repost.” [Department of Education guidance]
- Follow official directions. School staff should follow the school’s emergency operations plan and law-enforcement instructions. Decisions such as lockdown, evacuation, or closing belong to the school’s procedures and authorities’ assessment, not an individual observer acting independently. [CISA school staff guidance]
What information to give authorities
Share what you have; do not wait to assemble a complete record if there may be immediate danger. Useful details include:

- The school or location named in the post.
- The wording or substance of the threat, preserving the image or message without editing it.
- Where it appeared, including the platform or application name.
- The post’s URL or internet address and the account or username, if available.
- The date and time it appeared, if visible.

Do not dismiss a post as a hoax
A claim that something was a joke, a vague message, or another person’s label of “hoax” does not establish that it is harmless. The FBI advises people to report concerning evidence and let investigators assess credibility. Hoax threats can disrupt schools, divert law-enforcement resources, and create fear and danger. Threats can also carry legal consequences, but the applicable law and outcome depend on the circumstances. The FBI’s 2018 discussion notes that an interstate threat may be prosecuted federally and that state or local charges may also apply; it is not a universal prediction of what will happen in an individual case.
