Contact the pension authority and the bank receiving the pension deposit as soon as possible. They handle different parts of the process: the authority confirms which payments are due and stops future pension payments, while the bank can explain how it will handle deposits made after the account holder’s death. A bank notification alone does not end the pension or establish who is entitled to money already paid.
The rules depend on the country and pension scheme. Social Security in the United States and CPP/OAS in Canada, for example, treat the month of death differently. Use the instructions for the specific pension, and ask separately whether a survivor benefit or death benefit may be available.
What to do first
- Identify each pension. Note the country, the pension scheme, and the authority or administrator responsible. A person may have more than one pension; reporting one does not necessarily notify the others.
- Report the death to each pension authority. Ask how to stop future payments, what information or documents it needs, and whether any recent payment must be returned.
- Notify the bank receiving the deposits. Ask how it will handle payments received after the death and whether it will return them to the sender or give the estate representative other instructions.
- Leave disputed or unclear payments untouched. Do not spend, withdraw, or transfer a deposit until the pension authority and bank explain whether it is payable and what to do with it. Keep notes of calls, reference numbers, letters, and any repayment.
- Ask about survivor entitlements separately. Stopping the deceased person’s pension does not determine whether a spouse, partner, child, or other eligible person can claim a survivor pension or death benefit.
Provide identifying details requested by the authority. Depending on the scheme, these may include the person’s name, date of birth, date of death, pension or social-insurance number, last address, and the reporter’s contact details. Follow that authority’s instructions about proof of death; requirements differ.

Why the pension authority and bank both need to know
The pension authority determines whether a payment is due under its program and updates the benefit record. The bank handles the account and may be asked to return a deposit. Telling only one of them may leave the other without the information it needs. Ask each organization what action it has taken and what, if anything, the estate representative must do next.

Do not assume that every deposit arriving after a death automatically belongs to the estate—or that every such deposit must be returned. The payment period and the pension scheme’s rules matter. The examples below are specific to the named programs and should not be applied to other pensions without checking their rules.
United States: Social Security and other federal pensions
Reporting a Social Security death
USAGov’s Social Security death guidance says a funeral director may report the death if given the deceased person’s Social Security number. If the funeral director does not report it, a family member can contact a local Social Security office or call the Social Security Administration (SSA). USAGov says SSA does not accept death reports online or by email.

A family member reporting directly can start the report without a death certificate, but SSA will need the certificate later to complete it. Follow the agency’s instructions about submitting it.

USAGov states that “The SSA cannot pay benefits for the month of a recipient’s death.” For example, if the person dies in July, a payment received in August for July must be returned. If the payment was deposited directly, USAGov advises notifying the financial institution as soon as possible and asking it to return the payment for the month of death and any later deposits. Other U.S. pension streams
Do not assume that a Social Security report covers a military retirement benefit or federal civilian retirement annuity. USAGov directs families to report military-retiree matters to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) and federal-retiree annuity matters to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Its after-death checklist also includes banks and other financial organizations among the organizations to notify.
Canada: CPP and OAS
Report the death to the responsible authority
The Government of Canada’s CPP/OAS death guidance says to report the death to Service Canada. Be ready to provide details such as the deceased’s name, date of birth and death, place of death, marital status, Social Insurance Number if known, and last address, along with contact information for the person reporting and the estate. Proof of death is not needed unless requested. If the deceased received Quebec Pension Plan benefits, contact Retraite Québec as well.

Which CPP/OAS payments belong to the estate
For CPP and OAS, the Government of Canada says, “The estate is entitled to the beneficiary’s OAS and CPP payments for the month of death.” Payments issued after that month must be returned. For a direct deposit that should be returned, the family should ask the bank to send it back to the originator or repay by cheque to the responsible office, following the instructions it provides. This rule is specific to CPP/OAS and is not the U.S. Social Security rule.

United Kingdom: direct benefit payments after death
The UK Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) staff guide describes cases where a direct payment reaches an account because the death report did not arrive in time. It explains that recovery may initially be sought from the bank or the deceased person’s representative or next of kin. The guide says that once a bank or building society knows a sole-account holder has died, it would normally return credits received after that date. This is staff guidance about recovery, not a substitute for current instructions from the particular pension administrator. Check with that administrator and the bank about the specific payment and account.

Questions to ask when you make the reports
- Has the death report been recorded, and is there a case or reference number?
- Which payment periods are payable, and which deposits, if any, need to be returned?
- Should the bank return a deposit directly, or should the estate repay the authority?
- What proof of death or other documents are needed, and how should they be sent?
- Does this pension have a separate survivor pension, death benefit, or claim process?
- Are there other pension administrators that must be notified separately?
There is no single reporting channel, deadline, or final-payment rule that applies to every pension. Use the current directions from the relevant authority, and do not infer entitlement from the fact that a payment reached a bank account.
