If a Marketplace buyer is at your home now and you feel unsafe, move somewhere secure and contact local emergency services or police. Once immediate safety is handled, preserve the messages and report the buyer or relevant listing using Facebook’s available reporting controls. A platform report does not replace contacting authorities about threats or danger.
If the buyer is at your home now
Do not open the door or confront the visitor if you feel unsafe. Move to a secure place and contact local emergency services or police if the buyer is threatening you, refuses to leave, or you otherwise believe there is an immediate risk. Meta’s guidance says: “Users aware of an emergency situation should immediately and directly contact local law enforcement officials.” Meta’s Law Enforcement Guidelines describe Meta’s emergency disclosure process as a route for law-enforcement officials, not a substitute for users contacting local authorities directly.
How to report the buyer or Marketplace activity
- Keep useful records. Save the Marketplace conversation, the buyer’s name or profile link, the relevant listing, dates and times, and a factual account of the visit. Keep any relevant footage you already have, consistent with local law. Avoid deleting the conversation. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs advises keeping communication on-platform because it helps users retain transaction records if a problem arises.
- Open the relevant Marketplace page. Go to the related listing or the buyer’s Marketplace profile and look for the Report link or control. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs identifies both the listing and seller’s Marketplace profile as places to look for reporting. The exact interface and available options may vary.
- Describe what happened accurately. State that the buyer came to your home without an agreed arrangement. Include relevant specifics, such as threats, refusal to leave, or repeat visits. The cited guidance does not establish that Facebook has a dedicated report category specifically for someone showing up at a home, so choose the closest available option and explain the facts.
- Contact police separately when appropriate. If there were threats, you feel unsafe, or unwanted visits recur, contact local law enforcement and share your records if requested. Facebook’s review of an account or listing is a separate process and does not initiate an emergency response. Local laws and police procedures depend on where you live.
- Stop engaging or block if needed. If further messages make you uncomfortable, you can stop responding and use Facebook’s available block and report tools. Blocking limits platform contact; it cannot prevent someone from physically returning if they know your address.
Marketplace report or police report?
| What you need addressed | Where to turn | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate danger, threats, refusal to leave, or a safety concern | Local emergency services or law enforcement | Contact authorities directly. The response depends on your location and the facts. |
| Potentially abusive or suspicious platform activity | Facebook’s Report control on the relevant Marketplace listing or profile, if available | Facebook can review platform activity under its policies; a report is not a police or emergency report. |
An unannounced visit is not automatically a crime everywhere. Whether it is unlawful depends on the jurisdiction and the circumstances; seek local guidance rather than assuming a universal legal rule.
Reduce the risk in future Marketplace sales
- Arrange exchanges in a public, well-lit place where practical, such as a police station, rather than sharing your home address unnecessarily.
- Tell a trusted person where you are going and when. Meta’s educational guidance also describes sharing a meeting plan with a trusted friend or family member through Messenger.
- Keep sale communication on Facebook so the transaction details remain accessible if a problem comes up.
These precautions are recommended in guidance from the Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs and Meta / MyDigitalWorld. The Ministry’s Marketplace page, last updated 30 January 2026, lists 4,550 scam reports for 2023 and 1,138 for 2022; those figures are Singapore Marketplace scam reports, not counts of buyers visiting sellers’ homes.
