If a dangerous driver is creating immediate danger, someone is seriously injured, or urgent help is needed, call 000. For a non-urgent police report, call 131 444 or use the relevant state or territory police reporting channel. Give the time and location, describe what the driver did, and share vehicle details and witness information if available. A near miss can be reported when it involved a real safety risk, but there is no single national near-miss procedure or guarantee of police follow-up.
Choose the right reporting route

A near miss with no continuing danger will generally be a non-urgent matter. If the driver remains an immediate threat, use 000 instead. This is a practical application of the emergency threshold, not a separate national rule for near misses. Australian Government Triple Zero guidance identifies life-threatening or time-critical events, including immediate danger and serious injury, as reasons to call.
What to include in a report
When it is safe, note the details while they are still fresh. Report what you observed rather than guessing at the driver’s motives, identity, or condition.
- When and where: the date and approximate time, road, direction of travel, nearest intersection or landmark, and state or territory.
- Vehicle: registration number, make or model, colour, and other identifying details you actually saw.
- Driving behaviour: describe specific actions, such as tailgating, running a red light, speeding, or erratic driving.
- What happened: explain why it was a near miss and whether anyone was injured or property was damaged.
- Witnesses: provide names and contact details if witnesses are willing to share them.
- Evidence: say whether you have original footage and ask how to provide it through an approved channel.
South Australia Police asks for the incident time, date and location, vehicle registration and description, behaviour, and witness contacts. Tasmania Police asks for the footage capture date, time, location, and registration if known. If someone is in immediate danger, prioritize the call and your safety over collecting details. Triple Zero guidance advises callers to stay calm, state the service needed, and give the location. South Australia Police; Tasmania Police; Australian Government Triple Zero guidance.

How reporting options differ by state
South Australia
South Australia Police lists tailgating, running red lights, speeding, burnouts, donuts, and snaking as examples of dangerous driving. Depending on urgency, a report can be made by calling 000, calling 131 444, attending a police station, or submitting it through Traffic Watch. Be prepared to give your own name and contact details. The state government also advises witnesses to report promptly and note the location, vehicle details, behaviour, and time. South Australian Government reporting guidance.
Tasmania
For an emergency or life-threatening situation, call 000. If dangerous driving is happening now, or you have no footage, Tasmania Police says to stop driving and call 131 444. For an earlier incident, you can submit digital evidence through the Tasmania Police portal. Include the capture date, time, location, and registration if known. The portal permits trimming a clip to the relevant driving but says not to convert or edit the file. Police say an officer will contact the submitter if they determine the footage shows an actionable offence; that does not mean every submission will receive contact.

Other states and territories
The Australian Institute of Criminology lists the 131 444 Police Assistance Line and links to jurisdictional online non-urgent crime-reporting portals. Eligibility for dangerous-driving or near-miss reports, and rules for submitting video, may differ by portal. Check the relevant state or territory police instructions before submitting online. Footage, privacy, and personal safety
Do not put yourself or anyone else at risk to obtain footage. Never handle a phone or try to film while driving; report only once you are safely stopped. Submit existing evidence through a police-approved channel and follow that jurisdiction’s instructions. Tasmania’s guidance to avoid converting or editing a submitted video is specific to its portal, not an established nationwide evidence standard.

Do not assume a direct police report is anonymous or that footage will lead to an investigation or particular outcome. Crime Stoppers is described as a way to share information without saying who you are, while a direct police report is a different route; South Australia Police says reporters should be prepared to provide contact details.
