Apple executive Kate Bergeron has described the layer as replaceable, but the available report does not provide a customer DIY procedure, and no iPhone Duo-specific public repair manual or instructions were found. Do not treat it as an ordinary screen protector or follow generic foldable-phone peeling advice.
What the iPhone Duo display layer is
This repair question concerns the nano-textured cover layer over the inner folding display, not a separate accessory protector. Apple describes the inner display as a layered assembly that includes a custom-polymer nano-textured cover layer, high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate. Those construction details are in Apple’s September 2026 iPhone Duo announcement.
Apple says the custom polymer has “up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry.” That is Apple’s product-design comparison, not an independent test or a quantified durability guarantee; the announcement passage does not identify the comparison set.
Apple’s Canadian specifications list a 7.6-inch folding OLED inner display with a nano-texture finish and a separate 5.4-inch outer display. The layer discussed here is associated with the inner panel, not the outer screen. See Apple’s Canadian technical specifications.

Can you peel off and replace it yourself?
A MacRumors report dated October 1, 2026, quoting Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron, says the layer is replaceable. Bergeron is quoted as saying: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” (MacRumors report).
“Replaceable” does not establish “user-replaceable.” The report does not give a DIY method or say that Apple instructs customers to perform the repair. The available information also does not establish that every service provider can do it. No iPhone Duo-specific public cover-layer repair manual, customer-facing tool list, or explicit DIY authorization was located. A manual for another model is not a substitute: Apple’s iPhone 17 Repair Manual applies to the iPhone 17, not the Duo.

Apple says its Self Service Repair program is intended for people experienced with the complexities of electronic-device repair and directs users to the manual for their exact model and repair. Its general guidance therefore does not provide authorization or instructions for this specific Duo layer; see Apple Self Service Repair.
Why generic screen-protector instructions are not enough
Apple presents the cover layer as part of an engineered folding-display stack with glass, adhesives, and a supporting plate. A report that a layer can be peeled off does not explain how to separate it without damaging the display or how to install and finish a replacement. The evidence does not establish safe heat settings, peel angles, blade or tool choices, adhesive handling, or post-repair tests. Do not improvise those steps or transfer a method from a different foldable phone.

Apple’s general iPhone display guidance says that, for most customers, a professional repair provider with certified technicians and genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable option. It identifies Apple and Apple Authorized Service Providers, and notes that Independent Repair Providers may also have access to genuine parts. The guidance is not a Duo cover-layer procedure. Apple also warns generally that untrained repairs or improperly replaced screws and cowlings may affect safety, damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury. How to arrange the repair and check the price
- Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Ask specifically whether they service the inner nano-textured cover layer on the iPhone Duo. Do not ask only for a “screen protector” replacement, which may be understood as an accessory.
- Confirm local availability. Ask whether this exact repair is offered in your region and whether the device needs to be inspected or sent for service. The available information does not establish a region-by-region provider list.
- Ask for the current fee and coverage terms. A MacRumors report dated October 1, 2026, said U.S. AppleCare+ customers could get the cover layer replaced for $19. That is the report’s stated U.S. AppleCare+ context, not a universal price; the report said the out-of-coverage price had not been disclosed. Confirm current eligibility and cost directly before arranging service.
