“Replace” can mean two different things in WordPress: remove the built-in Theme File Editor and Plugin File Editor, or install a separately maintained plugin that provides another file-editing interface. If your goal is security, disable the dashboard editors with DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT. If you need to write PHP, the safer standard workflow is to edit a copy of the files outside WordPress and transfer the changes. For block-theme design work, use the Site Editor instead of a PHP file editor.
What the default editors do
WordPress provides dashboard screens that allow administrators to open and modify theme and plugin files in real time. Those screens can change PHP on the running site, so a compromised or misused administrator account may be able to alter executable code. Make a backup before changing any file.

Disabling these screens reduces one route for dashboard-based code changes. It does not disable plugin installation or updates, hosting file access, server deployments, or every other way code can be changed.
Choose the replacement approach that matches your goal
| Goal | Recommended approach | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Remove PHP editing from the dashboard | Set DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT to true |
Disables WordPress’s built-in theme and plugin file-editing capability |
| Write or review PHP safely | Edit files with a desktop text editor, preferably in a staging or offline workflow, then transfer them | Keeps code changes outside the production dashboard |
| Edit block-theme layouts and styles | Use the WordPress Site Editor | Edits templates, template parts, styles, and site content visually; it is not a PHP editor |
| Use another dashboard code interface | Evaluate a current editor plugin independently | Adds a third-party interface with its own permissions, maintenance, and file scope |
Disable the built-in Theme and Plugin File Editors
Add the configuration constant
In wp-config.php, add:
define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true);
Place the setting according to WordPress’s official configuration guidance, then sign in to the dashboard and confirm that the theme and plugin editor screens are no longer available.

Understand what this setting does not do
- It does not remove administrator privileges generally.
- It does not block installing, updating, or deleting plugins and themes through other dashboard controls.
- It does not prevent changes made through hosting file managers, SFTP, deployment tools, or server access.
- It does not replace the need for strong authentication, least-privilege accounts, backups, updates, and monitoring.
Use this option when routine dashboard PHP editing is unnecessary. Keeping the editor available for convenience increases the number of places where executable code can be changed.
Use an offline or staging workflow for code
- Back up the site and confirm that you can restore it.
- Copy the relevant theme or plugin files to a controlled local or staging environment.
- Edit the copy with a text editor or development tool that can validate the code.
- Test the change before deploying it to production.
- Transfer only the reviewed files and keep a record of what changed.
WordPress’s guidance recommends editing files outside the dashboard and transferring the modified files. Avoid changing WordPress core files except wp-config.php unless there is a compelling reason and you document the change. For customizations, keep work in a child theme or a purpose-built plugin where that design is appropriate; verify the implementation details for your theme and WordPress version before deploying.
Use the Site Editor for block-theme design
The Site Editor is a separate visual interface for block themes. Depending on the active theme and WordPress version, it can expose templates, template parts, navigation, and global styles. It is intended for site structure and presentation, not for editing plugin PHP or arbitrary theme files.
If you are changing headers, footers, templates, or typography on a block theme, start in the Site Editor. If you are changing PHP behavior, use an offline or staging workflow instead.

Consider a replacement editor plugin carefully
WP Editor
The WordPress.org listing for WP Editor describes it as a replacement for the default plugin and theme editors. Treat that description as a feature claim, not a security endorsement. Check the live listing for recent updates, tested WordPress versions, support activity, reviews, and the permissions it requires before installation.
WPIDE – File Manager & Code Editor
WPIDE is listed as a file manager and code editor that can access wp-content. That broader reach may be useful, but it also makes file scope and administrator permissions especially important. Confirm exactly which directories and operations are available in the current release.

Questions to answer before installing either plugin
- Is it updated for your current WordPress release and PHP version?
- Who can open, edit, upload, rename, or delete files?
- Can it reach only the intended theme or plugin, or the wider
wp-contentdirectory? - Does it provide backups, syntax checks, revision history, or a recovery path?
- Are support responses and compatibility reports current?
- Can you test it on staging and remove it cleanly if it causes a problem?
A replacement plugin does not automatically provide stronger security than the built-in editor. It is another software component with its own maintenance history and attack surface. Do not install one merely because the WordPress editors were disabled; install it only when its capabilities and risks fit a defined workflow.

The editors are still visible
Check that the constant is spelled exactly DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT, has the value true, and is loaded from the site’s active wp-config.php. Clear any dashboard or page cache, then sign out and back in. A host, security plugin, or deployment process may also be managing the configuration.
You need to recover after a bad edit
Restore the affected file or site backup, or redeploy the last known-good copy through your normal hosting or deployment method. Do not make additional production edits until you have identified the failing change.
A plugin editor cannot access a file
Check its documented directory scope and the permissions of the account using it. A tool limited to wp-content will not provide access to every WordPress file, and disabling the core editors does not grant a replacement plugin any special access.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- Security-first administration: disable the built-in editors and use controlled file transfer.
- Block-theme customization: use the Site Editor for templates and styles.
- Occasional PHP maintenance: edit offline or on staging, test, then deploy.
- Required dashboard editing: evaluate a replacement plugin as a separate, current software choice rather than assuming it is safer.
