You can replace a sermon video without ending a YouTube livestream only if you change the video in the system feeding the live broadcast—not merely in the church’s regular YouTube playlist. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes playlist editing from the encoder feed sent to a live event, and it does not guarantee that a change in a particular encoder or hosted playout service will be seamless. Identify the system first, switch the source there, then verify picture and sound in its preview and on the YouTube watch page.
First identify which “playlist” you mean
The phrase “YouTube live playlist” can refer to two different things:
- A regular channel playlist: a collection of published videos that viewers can play in sequence. YouTube’s playlist controls let an authorized user remove or reorder items. Those controls are not documented as changing the video currently being sent to an active livestream. YouTube’s playlist instructions.
- The live video queue or source: the media being played by an encoder or hosted playout service, whose output is sent to a YouTube live event. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder to the event with its server URL and stream key. To replace what is on air, change the source in that encoder or service while leaving its output connected. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
If you are unsure, ask the operator what is playing the video: a desktop encoder, a hosted playout service, a webcam or phone, or just a regular channel playlist. The right procedure depends on that system.

Replace the video in an encoder-based broadcast
YouTube documents how an encoder connects to a live event and how stopping the encoder’s content ends a stream; it does not specify how every encoder handles replacing a queued video while live. Use the controls for the church’s actual production system, and do not assume the change will be instant or invisible to viewers.

- Confirm access and the correct event. Make sure you are operating the encoder or playout system that feeds the church’s current YouTube live event. YouTube lists channel Owners, Managers and Editors as roles that can manage live streams; Viewers can monitor but cannot manage them. See YouTube’s live-stream permissions guidance.
- Locate the outgoing media source or playback queue. In the encoder or hosted service, identify the sermon video currently feeding the live output and the control used to replace or switch it. The exact label and steps vary by product, so follow that system’s instructions rather than changing the regular YouTube playlist.
- Load or select the replacement upstream. Prepare the replacement video in the encoder or service’s own controls. Keep the same YouTube event and the encoder’s output connected. Do not select End Stream or stop sending content from the encoder: YouTube documents those actions as ending the stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Check the production preview before switching, if available. Confirm the intended video is selected and that its sound is present. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream quality. The preview and monitoring controls in your production system may differ.
- Make the change using that system’s live controls. Watch the transition in the production preview. The cited YouTube guidance does not guarantee that a live playlist edit in a particular encoder takes effect immediately or without a brief interruption.
- Verify the viewer-facing result. Check the YouTube watch page as well as the production preview. Confirm the replacement picture and audio are reaching viewers. Have a prepared fallback scene or source in case the incoming video is blank.
Do not reset or replace the stream key as part of a video change. YouTube describes resetting a key as a response to a compromised key, and the encoder must be updated afterward. YouTube’s encoder instructions.
If you only need to edit the regular channel playlist
Removing or reordering a regular playlist item changes that playlist’s membership or order; YouTube does not document it as a way to replace the feed in an active live event.

- Open the church’s playlist while signed in to an account with permission to edit it.
- For the item to remove, open its More menu and choose Remove from [PLAYLIST NAME].
- Reorder remaining items by dragging them, or add the replacement video using the playlist controls.
These edits are appropriate for the channel playlist, but do not treat them as a live-feed switch. YouTube’s playlist instructions.

What to check before attempting a live switch
- Who controls the feed? Establish whether it comes from an encoder, a hosted playout service, a webcam or mobile device, or another church-specific workflow. Encoder advice may not fit a camera-based or custom setup.
- What does “replace” do in that system? Verify whether it changes the current item or only affects later playback, and what viewers will see during the transition. The cited YouTube documentation does not settle these product-specific behaviors.
- Can you preview and monitor? Check both picture and audio after the change. YouTube recommends using the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream quality. YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Is there a fallback? Have another source or scene ready in case the replacement fails to load. This is an operational precaution, not a specific YouTube feature.
- Is the video suitable to stream? Confirm the church has the rights to use the sermon recording and any included music or other material. Playlist placement does not establish permission to broadcast content.
Archive planning is separate from replacing a video
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive limitation, not a way to change the on-air video. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
