To repair a suspected WMI repository problem, check it first with winmgmt /verifyrepository. If Windows reports the repository as inconsistent, try winmgmt /salvagerepository and verify again. Use winmgmt /resetrepository only when there is a clear reason: reset returns the repository to its initial operating-system installation state and is more disruptive than salvage.
Before rebuilding, confirm the repository is a plausible cause
A WMI error does not, by itself, prove that the repository is corrupt. Microsoft notes that failures elsewhere in Windows can surface as WMI errors. The affected application, its WMI provider or namespace, system resources, and related event messages may point to another cause. Microsoft’s winmgmt command reference warns that deleting the WMI repository as a first action can damage Windows or installed applications.
Check and repair the repository in stages
Run the commands below in an elevated Command Prompt. Microsoft’s winmgmt command reference documents these switches for Windows client versions beginning with Windows Vista, including Windows 10 and 11.
- Check consistency: Run
winmgmt /verifyrepository. Without a path argument, this checks the live repository WMI is currently using. It is diagnostic; it does not repair the repository. - Attempt salvage if the result is inconsistent: Run
winmgmt /salvagerepository. It checks consistency and rebuilds the repository if it detects inconsistency, merging readable content from the existing repository. MOF files marked with#pragma autorecoverare restored. - Verify and retest: Run
winmgmt /verifyrepositoryagain, then test the WMI function or application that originally failed. A repaired repository will not resolve a problem caused by another Windows component, provider, or application. - Reserve reset for a justified case: If the problem remains and other evidence supports repository damage, consider
winmgmt /resetrepositoryonly after weighing its impact or getting appropriate support guidance.
What each command does—and what it does not do
| Command | Purpose | Effect and caution |
|---|---|---|
winmgmt /verifyrepository |
Checks consistency of the live repository when no saved-copy path is supplied. | Diagnostic only; a consistency result does not identify every possible cause of a WMI error. |
winmgmt /salvagerepository |
Checks consistency and rebuilds if it finds inconsistency. | Merges readable content from the inconsistent repository and restores MOFs marked for autorecovery. |
winmgmt /resetrepository |
Resets the repository to its state when the operating system was first installed. | More disruptive than salvage. MOFs marked for autorecovery are restored; this does not guarantee that every third-party provider or product registration will be restored. |
Why reset is not routine cleanup
Reset is not simply a more forceful version of verification: it returns the repository to its initial operating-system installation state. The autorecovery mechanism restores only MOF files marked with #pragma autorecover; do not assume that every third-party provider or product registration will be recreated.

Microsoft also cautions against resetting a repository just because it is large. Repository size varies with a machine’s resources, services, applications, and environment. In its performance guidance, Microsoft advises against resetting a bloated repository without prior guidance from Microsoft support professionals. That guidance discusses server troubleshooting context, including RSoP logging and monitoring applications such as Configuration Manager; it does not establish a general Windows 10/11 size threshold. See Microsoft’s WMI performance troubleshooting guidance.

If verification reports a consistent repository, or salvage does not resolve the original failure, investigate the specific application or provider rather than repeatedly rebuilding WMI. Check relevant event details and consider other documented causes, including folder security settings, low disk space, memory issues, provider faults, and application problems. Microsoft’s WMI event message reference describes inconsistency, recovery, and startup messages and possible causes.

For an unresolved issue, collect relevant diagnostic information and contact Microsoft Support or the product’s support provider. Microsoft’s Azure Windows VM Agent troubleshooting guide illustrates a check, backup, salvage, and reset sequence for that specific agent problem, followed by validation and escalation if it persists. That workload-specific procedure is not a general instruction to reset WMI on every Windows PC.
