Most Bose over-ear headphone problems can be tried safely at home first: a proper charge, a restart of both the headphones and the device they pair with, a volume and routing check, a Bluetooth re-pair, and a software update. Worn or detached ear cushions are the one physical repair Bose’s support materials describe for owners to do themselves, but the exact steps depend on the model. Internal faults such as battery or circuit problems are a job for Bose’s service channels, not a home repair.
Before you follow any procedure or order a part, identify your exact model and generation. “Bose over-ear headphones” covers several product lines, and the cushion, battery and service details are not interchangeable between them.
Step 1: Identify your model and the symptom
Find the full model name printed on the headband, earcup or original box, for example QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), QuietComfort 15 or QuietComfort 35. Then match your problem to the closest symptom below and open the Bose support page for that model. Bose’s model-specific articles give different steps for different generations, so a page for one model should not be used for another.

Step 2: Run the safe external checks
Bose’s general guide for headphones, earbuds and speakers recommends these checks in roughly this order. Each one is reversible and carries no risk to the hardware.

- Charge the headphones for a short period, then try them again. A brief charge can reveal whether the battery is simply low.
- Power-cycle both the headphones and the source device, such as a phone, tablet or laptop.
- Check volume at every layer: the headphones, the source device and any app that is playing the audio.
- Forget the headphones in the source device’s Bluetooth settings, then pair them again from scratch.
- Check the companion app or the device’s software for available updates, and install them.
If a charging problem remains after these steps, confirm both ends of the cable, try a different cable and power source, and make sure the headphones have returned to room temperature if they were exposed to extreme heat or cold. Step 3: Replace or reattach ear cushions by model
Cushions are the most common physical repair, and the one that most often goes wrong when the wrong part is used. Bose’s instructions differ by generation, so follow only the section that matches your headphones.

QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)
Bose’s official cushion procedure for this model is a five-step process:
- Pull the cushion away from the earcup until its rigid flange is clear of the tabs.
- Align the oval shape of the cushion with the earcup.
- Start one edge of the flange under a tab.
- Press around the perimeter until the flange snaps under the remaining tabs.
- Check that all ten tabs are visible above the mounting flange. Bose’s instruction reads: “Once the entire perimeter of the cushion has been snapped into place, ensure all ten tabs can be seen above the mounting flange.”

Older QuietComfort models
Legacy Bose manuals describe reattachment differently, and the instructions should not be transferred between products. The QuietComfort 15 owner’s guide describes pressing the mounting rim beneath eight tabs. Another legacy QuietComfort guide describes fitting the plastic skirting smoothly around the earcup. Use only the manual for your actual product. Both manuals also say to keep the openings clear and to prevent moisture from entering the earcups. Buying a replacement kit
Search by the full model name and generation, not just “Bose ear cushions.” Compare the listing’s explicit compatibility statement, whether the included scrims are listed, and the seller’s return policy. Only the official instructions establish how a cushion should fit; they do not rate third-party cushion quality, so treat listing claims as the seller’s own.

Step 4: Handle internal faults through Bose service
Battery replacement, hinge repair, headband work and circuit-board faults are not covered by a single home procedure. Bose’s battery-removal index is organised by model, and the public material does not describe one universal method for opening over-ear headphones. Opening the earcups or headband can also damage the seals and the cushion mounting, so do not attempt it unless a model-specific official document tells you how.

Repair or replace?
Bose’s general guide suggests replacement may be the simpler route when any of the following applies:
- Battery life has dropped noticeably over time.
- Problems keep returning after resets and re-pairing.
- Physical wear affects comfort, fit or charging.
- Your needs have changed, for example you now need a different feature set.
This is general guidance rather than a model-specific cost comparison. Check the current price of a repair or replacement for your model and region before deciding.
In practice, the decision usually comes down to whether a reversible check solves the symptom, and whether the issue is cosmetic and fixable with a model-specific cushion kit or internal and needing service.
