Start with an <img> reference, give it explicit dimensions, and make sure wkhtmltopdf can read the SVG and its dependencies. If the result is blank or incomplete, test a minimal file with your exact wkhtmltopdf binary before changing the SVG or production pipeline.
Start with an SVG image reference
For a standalone SVG file, begin with a plain HTML image element. Explicit dimensions give the renderer a predictable layout box; the SVG should also have a useful viewBox and intrinsic dimensions.

wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdfKeep the image-loading option enabled. wkhtmltopdf documents --images as the option to enable image printing and --no-images as the disabling counterpart. Images are enabled by default, but specifying --images can make the intent clear when troubleshooting:
wkhtmltopdf --images input.html output.pdfQt WebKit’s reference documentation describes its widgets as facilities for rendering HTML, XHTML, and SVG documents, styled with CSS and scripted with JavaScript. That is the underlying reason SVG can work here; it is not a promise that every SVG feature behaves identically across wkhtmltopdf builds.

Make local SVG files and dependencies accessible
A local SVG can depend on more than the SVG file itself: it may reference an external image, stylesheet, font, or other asset. wkhtmltopdf’s usage documentation describes local-file access as disabled by default and provides two ways to permit it. Choose the narrow permission when practical:
wkhtmltopdf --allow /path/to/assets input.html output.pdfAlternatively, enable local-file access for the conversion:
wkhtmltopdf --enable-local-file-access input.html output.pdfUse the actual asset directory in place of /path/to/assets, and make sure the paths in the HTML and SVG resolve from the conversion environment. A file that opens in a desktop browser may still fail when the command runs under a service account, container, or different working directory. Grant access only to the files the conversion needs rather than broadly exposing local paths.

Choose an inclusion method that matches the SVG
Use <img> for a separate SVG file
This is the simplest initial test and a good baseline for a diagram or icon. If the image is absent, first check its URL or filesystem path, access permission, and whether image loading is enabled. Then simplify the SVG and its dependencies to isolate the cause.

Inlining the SVG markup in the HTML can help determine whether the failure is loading the external file or rendering its contents. It is not a universal fix: a report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3 with patched Qt found that inlining an SVG made embedded images visible but caused other elements to render incorrectly. Treat inline SVG as a controlled comparison, not proof that the whole document will render faithfully.
Do not rely on <object> as the fallback
An upstream report describes an SVG shown in a browser through <object data="path/to/example.svg" type="image/svg+xml"> but producing a blank PDF in wkhtmltopdf. The report was marked invalid, so it does not establish that every build fails this way; it does show why <object> is a poor first troubleshooting choice. Compare <img> or inline SVG instead.

Account for timing when SVGs are generated or loaded indirectly
If JavaScript creates the SVG, inserts it into the page, or loads its dependencies asynchronously, wkhtmltopdf may capture before that work has finished. The usage reference documents a --javascript-delay default of 200 milliseconds. You can increase the delay for a diagnostic run:
wkhtmltopdf --javascript-delay 1000 input.html output.pdfThis waits longer; it does not guarantee that a page has reached the correct state. Where possible, simplify the page so that the SVG is present at initial load, or use a deterministic delay appropriate to the page. The documented options also include --load-error-handling and --load-media-error-handling. These affect how load failures are handled, but do not repair an unsupported SVG feature or grant access to a forbidden local file.

Blank SVG or missing image
- Check that the input HTML points to the right file and that the conversion process can access it.
- Confirm that image loading is enabled, and allow the directory containing local assets with
--allowor explicitly enable local-file access. - Reduce the case to one
<img>and one SVG. Remove external fonts, CSS, and nested images, then add dependencies back one at a time. - If the SVG is generated by JavaScript, test a longer
--javascript-delayand verify that the graphic exists before capture.
Nested images disappear
Issue #2996 reports a case using wkhtmltopdf 0.12.3 with patched Qt in which an external SVG contained an <image> with a base64-encoded JPEG via xlink:href, but the embedded image was missing from the PDF. The reporter said the SVG worked in Firefox and Chrome; inlining it made the images visible but affected other elements. If your SVG has nested images, isolate that content and test your exact build. If it remains unreliable, preprocess the asset or replace the nested image dependency with a simpler supported input.

Clipping, opacity, or other SVG styling differs
A report opened in 2020 described differences between patched and unpatched builds, including missing clip-path paths and ignored opacity. The report also noted that an Xvfb setup rasterized <img> elements. Those are reported compatibility cases, not a complete feature matrix. If your drawing uses clipping, transparency, filters, or complex styling, create a small reproduction and compare its output on the exact target system.
The PDF looks pixelated at high zoom
A report for wkhtmltopdf 0.12.5 with patched Qt describes an SVG being rasterized in the resulting PDF and looking pixelated at 400% zoom. SVG input therefore does not guarantee vector preservation in the PDF. When crisp scaling matters, inspect the PDF at high zoom and verify the actual output rather than inferring vector fidelity from the source format.
A reliable test sequence
- Validate the source. Confirm the SVG is well-formed and has a meaningful
viewBox, width, and height. Open it directly to check for missing resources, but do not assume browser success guarantees wkhtmltopdf success. - Build a minimal HTML case. Include one
<img>reference with explicit pixel dimensions and render it to PDF. - Permit required resources. Use
--imagesand either--allow /path/to/assetsor--enable-local-file-accesswhen the SVG or its dependencies are local. - Remove dependencies to isolate failures. Temporarily replace external fonts, CSS, and nested images with inline or preprocessed assets; restore them individually to find the failing dependency.
- Compare inclusion forms. Test the minimal graphic as inline SVG and as an
<img>. Avoid treating<object>as the default workaround. - Test the deployed binary. Record the wkhtmltopdf version, whether Qt is patched, operating system, and packaging. Run the same test in the actual production environment.
- Inspect the PDF itself. Check missing details and edges, and zoom in when vector fidelity is important. If required features still fail, evaluate a maintained renderer rather than searching for a flag that cannot add engine support.
Record the build and plan for maintenance
When a conversion behaves differently between a developer machine and production, report the precise wkhtmltopdf version, Qt patch status, operating system, and installation or packaging method. These details matter because compatibility reports describe different outcomes across patched and unpatched builds and environments.

The upstream wkhtmltopdf repository was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023 and is read-only. That makes exact-version testing and a fallback plan especially relevant for production pipelines. Preserve a representative SVG fixture and expected PDF output so that build, operating-system, or packaging changes can be checked before deployment. If your requirements include nested images, clip paths, opacity, or dependable vector preservation and your tested binary does not meet them, assess another maintained rendering engine against those requirements.
