With SoundScript, compile a musical cue once in C# and use the resulting object to write both a MIDI file and a WAV file. Call RenderMidi() for the symbolic music data and RenderWave() for rendered audio; each output serves a different purpose.

Generate both files from one C# source

The core workflow is to pass a SoundScript definition to SoundScriptEngine.Compile(...), then save the byte arrays returned by its two render methods. Anup Jayant Dharangutti’s tutorial demonstrates this pattern with SoundScript 13.0.0:

using SoundScript;

var cue = SoundScriptEngine.Compile(
    "tempo 120 track cue { instrument piano mf C4 e E4 e G4 q }");

File.WriteAllBytes("success.mid", cue.RenderMidi());
File.WriteAllBytes("success.wav", cue.RenderWave());

The same compiled cue supplies both files, so you do not need to maintain separate musical definitions for MIDI and WAV. The example uses File.WriteAllBytes to write the returned data to the current working directory. [Anup Jayant Dharangutti’s tutorial]

What the cue says

  • tempo 120 sets the tempo.
  • instrument piano selects the piano instrument.
  • mf indicates mezzo-forte dynamics.
  • C4 e E4 e G4 q specifies two eighth notes followed by a quarter note.

This short definition is enough to show the workflow; for a longer composition, SoundScript source can also live in a .ss file.

Choose MIDI or WAV for the next step

Output What it contains Useful for
MIDI Symbolic musical events rather than rendered sound Sequencing, editing in a DAW, and MIDI processing
WAV Rendered audio Playback, delivery, packaging in an application, and audio processing

These files are not interchangeable versions of the same kind of data. MIDI preserves musical events for compatible software to interpret and edit; WAV is audio that can be played or processed as sound. Render both when you need an editable musical representation as well as a ready-to-play audio file. [Anup Jayant Dharangutti’s tutorial]

Use a .ss file for a larger composition

Keeping a longer cue outside the C# source can make it easier to edit the composition independently. SoundScript’s tutorial shows loading a .ss file with SoundScriptEngine.CompileFile(...) and rendering the compiled result to WAV. The key distinction is that the source is stored in a file, while the compiled object remains the point from which the output is rendered. [Anup Jayant Dharangutti’s tutorial]

Check the package version before installing

The tutorial’s install example pins SoundScript to version 13.0.0 and says that release targets .NET 10. The official SoundScript site reported version 16.0.1 when accessed on October 7, 2026. Treat the tutorial’s version as part of its example, not as confirmation that it is still the recommended package version: check the current NuGet listing and official documentation before choosing a version. The available information does not establish that the exact 13.0.0 pin remains the preferred installation. [SoundScript official site]

Know when the direct Wave route is different

SoundScript also documents a Wave-specific workflow: SoundScript.Wave can render .ss or .ssw files directly to WAV, and release notes introduce the soundscript wave CLI verb. This is distinct from the C# example that compiles a cue and calls render methods. In particular, Wave-only directives are rejected by the MIDI run path, so do not assume every Wave script can also be processed through the MIDI route. [SoundScript release notes]
