You can change the label shown beneath an app icon on some Samsung phones, but that does not rename the installed app throughout the system. One UI 6 shortens the displayed names of certain Samsung apps automatically. For custom Home screen labels, a reported Good Lock Home Up method is available on One UI 8.5 and later, though its menus and availability can vary by device.
What changing an app name actually changes
An app label is the text a launcher displays alongside an icon. Editing that label changes how the item appears on the Home screen; it does not establish that the installed app’s name has changed in Settings or elsewhere.
Samsung says that in One UI 6, “The actual app names have not changed—only the way they appear.” For example, the displayed label “Store” can refer to the full Galaxy Store app name. You can search the Apps screen for the full name or find it under Settings > Apps. Samsung Support explains the simplified app names in One UI 6.
One UI 6: Samsung’s automatic label simplification
On devices running One UI 6, based on Android 14, Samsung shortens the displayed labels of some of its apps by removing “Samsung” or “Galaxy.” It is an automatic display change, not a manual rename option for every installed app.

Samsung notes that app availability can differ by country, and the interface can vary by model and region. If a label is shortened, use the Apps screen search or Settings > Apps to confirm the full app name.
One UI 8.5 and later: reported Home Up label editing
SamMobile reported a Good Lock Home Up workflow for editing app and widget labels on the Home screen in One UI 8.5 and later. This is secondary reporting; Samsung’s retrieved support pages do not confirm it as a universal built-in setting. Check your own phone for the option, since availability and menu names may differ.

- Install Good Lock and Home Up from Galaxy Store. If Home Up is not listed separately, open it from within Good Lock.
- In Good Lock, open Home Up and enable its main control and Home screen setting.
- Open the Home screen settings, enable App icon setting, then turn on Edit item label on home screen.
- Return to the Home screen and long-press the app or widget you want to edit. Tap the pencil icon beside its name, change the visible label, and save.
According to the report, labels revert if Home Up is disabled and return when it is re-enabled. Samsung’s Good Lock Galaxy Store listing describes it as a Galaxy customization app, lists support for Samsung devices running Android 8.0 or higher, and cautions that some devices may not be supported. That broad compatibility statement does not guarantee this particular Home Up feature works on every supported device.

Samsung’s shortcut guide covers adding and managing shortcuts. A shortcut’s placement or presentation is separate from changing an app’s underlying name. For a third-party launcher, consult the current instructions in the version you install; customization applies to the launcher’s presentation, not necessarily other system screens. If the label-editing option is missing
- Check your phone’s One UI version in its software information.
- Look for Good Lock and Home Up in Galaxy Store, and verify that Home Up and its Home screen and App icon settings are enabled.
- Search the Apps screen or open Settings > Apps to locate the original full app name.
- If you used Home Up, check whether it remains enabled; the reported custom labels depend on it.
- Allow for differences in model, software version, region, and carrier. Samsung says available settings can vary across those factors.
