On Windows 10, the weather, finance, sports, traffic, and similar lock-screen cards are part of Microsoft’s Weather and more experience. To remove them, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, set Choose one app to show detailed status on the lock screen to None, then press Windows key + L to check the lock screen. This Settings fix applies to Windows 10 Pro as well as other Windows 10 editions.
Remove Weather and more from the lock screen
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under Choose one app to show detailed status on the lock screen, select the current app, such as Weather and more.
- Choose None.
- Press Windows key + L to lock the PC and check the actual lock screen.
The background, clock, and sign-in controls remain; the detailed-status cards are removed. This does not uninstall Weather, Microsoft Edge, or Windows components. Microsoft’s lock-screen instructions identify Weather and more as the source of these cards and recommend choosing None to stop showing detailed status.
Microsoft does not currently provide a supported way to remove only one Weather and more card—for example, traffic—while keeping the others. The practical choices are to leave the feature enabled or choose None to remove its lock-screen cards.
Remove smaller app indicators, tips, or notifications
Quick-status app icons
If small indicators such as mail, calendar, or alarms remain, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Under Choose which apps show quick status on the lock screen, remove the selected apps. The detailed-status control removes the larger information area; quick-status apps are controlled separately.

Lock-screen tips and suggestions
If promotional or informational text remains, look on the same Lock screen settings page for Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen and clear it if available. The option’s presence and wording can vary with the Windows 10 update state.
Notification banners
For app alerts rather than weather or news cards, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions and clear Show notifications on the lock screen. You can also clear Show reminders and incoming VoIP calls on the lock screen, or turn off notifications for individual apps under Get notifications from these senders. These notification controls are separate from lock-screen status apps; see Microsoft’s Windows notification guidance.

Keep or remove weather and news on the taskbar
Windows 10’s taskbar feature is called News and interests, and it is separate from Weather and more on the lock screen. To remove the taskbar control, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, select News and interests > Turn off. This does not replace the lock-screen fix. If you want taskbar weather to remain, leave News and interests enabled and change only the Lock screen detailed-status setting. Microsoft documents the taskbar feature separately in its News and interests instructions.
If the cards remain or return
- Confirm the operating system. Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and check that the device is running Windows 10. Windows 11 uses a different Widgets-based lock-screen experience. - Reapply None. In Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, temporarily choose another detailed-status app, reopen the selector, and choose None.
- Sign out or restart, then press Windows key + L to test the actual lock screen rather than relying only on the Settings preview.
- Identify what remains. Check whether it is a notification banner, a quick-status icon, or lock-screen tips, then use the separate controls above.
- Check device management. On a work- or school-managed PC, a policy, mobile device management profile, or provisioning script may restore a setting. Contact the administrator if it keeps changing.
Some users have reported inconsistent behavior after changes or updates, but community reports do not establish a universal Windows 10 fault or a reliable registry fix. Avoid registry edits or removing related packages as a first step: methods can vary by Windows build, affect other users or features, and are not a substitute for the supported Settings control.

Why Windows 11 instructions may not apply
On Windows 10, the taskbar surface is News and interests and the lock-screen cards are controlled through Lock screen status settings. Do not follow Windows 11 directions that use Taskbar settings > Widgets as though they controlled Windows 10’s lock screen. Microsoft’s Widgets documentation describes the newer Windows 11 experience. A Windows 10 Pro edition does not change the supported fix: choose None in Lock screen settings. Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 remains usable, but Microsoft no longer provides ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system. That end of support does not prevent you from using the Lock screen setting to remove Weather and more.
