One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirst determine whether the audio has a constant offset or progressive drift. If it is early or late by roughly the same amount throughout, shift it by a measured amount. If the gap grows toward the end, a single shift will not fix the file: correct the timing rate or timestamp handling, then check the result at several points and in your actual YouTube streaming workflow.
Tell a constant offset from growing drift
A constant offset means the audio is displaced by about the same amount from the video at the beginning, middle, and end. A shift can correct that stable displacement. Drift means the difference changes as the file plays: audio may match near the start but lead or lag increasingly later. That requires correcting rate or timestamp behavior, not simply moving the whole audio track.
Use an event visible in the picture and audible in the sound, such as a clap or impact. Compare it near the beginning and at one or more later points. Estimate whether the audio leads or lags and whether the gap stays stable. Stream start-time metadata alone cannot reveal an offset already embedded in the recorded content; the FFmpeg Cookbook explains this distinction in its guide to FFmpeg timestamp and audio-sync options.
Prepare and inspect the source file
- Keep the original. Make a working copy before changing timing. Note the file and tool versions you use so you can reproduce or undo the correction.
- Choose sync points. Find a clear visible-and-audible event near the start, then compare one or more later events. Record the approximate gap and direction at each point.
- Check where the fault appears. If the mismatch occurs only in one editor or player, consider whether it handles variable-frame-rate (VFR) timestamps correctly. VFR video with valid timestamps can remain synchronized, while software that mishandles those timestamps may show a problem. The FFmpeg Cookbook guide to worsening audio drift discusses this case-specific distinction.
- Classify before correcting. A stable gap points to a constant offset; a widening or shrinking gap points to drift. Do not apply a guessed one-time shift to a gap that keeps growing.
Choose a correction that matches the symptom
| What you observe | Approach | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio is consistently early or late | Shift it by the measured offset. | This fixes a stable displacement, not progressive drift. |
| Audio increasingly leads or lags | Estimate and correct the rate or timestamp behavior using measurements across the file. | Audio filtering may require re-encoding; inspect the corrected output at multiple points. |
| Drift appears only in software that mishandles VFR timestamps | A constant-frame-rate (CFR) copy may be a case-specific workaround. | It can require re-encoding video and audio. Check that the new copy stays in sync. |
| Tracks from a recording or capture drift against each other | Check application, operating-system, and device sample rates, device consistency, and drivers. | A latency adjustment cannot align tracks whose rates differ. |
Correct a stable offset
Use an offset measured from the file, not a generic number from an example. FFmpeg provides stream selection and timestamp options as well as audio filters; the appropriate choice depends on whether the audio is early or late and how the streams are timed. The FFmpeg Cookbook’s guide to -itsoffset, adelay, and -async describes those options. Treat its command examples as starting points, not universal fixes, and verify the resulting file.

For a track-level adjustment in Audacity, its recording troubleshooting manual describes dragging a misaligned overdub track and setting latency compensation. That is suitable for a stable alignment issue; it does not correct progressive rate drift. See Audacity’s recording troubleshooting FAQ.
Correct progressive drift
When the gap changes across the duration, compare measurements from early and late sync points and estimate the rate correction from the actual file. A sample-rate or device-clock mismatch can make tracks run at different speeds. Audacity’s manual warns that when a newly recorded track runs at a different speed, it progressively drifts, so latency correction cannot synchronize the whole track. This concerns overdub recording and rate mismatch; it is not a YouTube-wide sync guarantee.

In FFmpeg, the rubberband filter can time-stretch audio and change pitch, but it is available only in builds configured with --enable-librubberband. Confirm filter availability in your installed build and select the correction based on measured drift. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for rubberband. A speed-based correction can affect pitch unless time-stretching is used; listen to the output as well as checking sync.
If VFR timestamp handling is the suspected cause, first determine whether the mismatch is confined to a particular application. A CFR conversion is a possible workaround in some cases, but it may re-encode audio and video and should not be assumed necessary for every VFR file.

Verify the corrected file before streaming
- Recheck the same visible-and-audible events used for diagnosis near the beginning, middle, and end.
- Listen through edits, transitions, and loop points if the playlist repeats clips; a discontinuity may be most apparent at a loop boundary.
- Test representative corrected material through the actual playlist and YouTube streaming workflow. A local preview cannot establish how a particular encoder, player, or live-stream setup will handle the file.
- If the sync differs between local playback and the stream, isolate the issue by comparing the same points in the file and in the streamed result before changing the file again.
No universal offset or rate correction applies to every recording, and no YouTube-specific acceptable audio-sync tolerance is established here. The FFmpeg Cookbook’s published values and command patterns are illustrative; derive any correction from your own file.
Troubleshooting common sync problems
- It matches at the start but not at the end: Treat this as drift. Measure at multiple points and investigate rate or timestamp behavior; a constant shift will only move the mismatch.
- The offset stays the same throughout: Apply a measured shift, then recheck several points to ensure the gap is stable.
- Only one editor or player looks wrong: Check its VFR timestamp handling and compare playback in the intended streaming path before re-encoding.
- Audacity latency compensation helps at one point but not elsewhere: Check for sample-rate or device-clock mismatch. Latency compensation does not repair progressive drift.
- The FFmpeg command reports that rubberband is unavailable: The installed build may lack librubberband support. Use a build configured with that library or choose another suitable method; do not assume every FFmpeg build includes the filter.
- The local corrected file looks right but the live result does not: Recheck representative material in the actual workflow. The specific playlist streamer, encoder, and live-stream configuration can affect the result.
Or let it run in the cloud
For the separate job of keeping a YouTube playlist live, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not fix sync already present in a file, so correct and verify the media first. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details or start the free first day.
