Use wp_dequeue_style() for narrow, handle-based control; conditionally enqueue feature styles when possible; or use one generated used-CSS feature such as WP Rocket or Perfmatters. Purge and regenerate caches, then test responsive and interactive states before keeping the change.
What “unused CSS” means in WordPress
A stylesheet can be valid and still be unused on a particular URL. A contact-form stylesheet may load on every page even though the form appears only on Contact. Theme styles also contain selectors for menus, modals, validation messages, breakpoints and editor-generated blocks that may not appear in the initial viewport but are needed later.
PageSpeed Insights reports the bytes not used during the URL and state it tested; it does not prove that every reported selector is safe to delete site-wide. Treat the warning as a route-and-state optimization task, not as permission to strip selectors from shared CSS.
Measure before changing anything
Use Chrome DevTools Coverage
- Open the representative page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools, select the three-dot menu, choose More tools, then Coverage.
- Click Reload in the Coverage panel and let the page finish loading.
- Interact with the page: open navigation, dialogs and sliders; focus fields; submit an invalid form; resize between mobile and desktop widths; and exercise any logged-in or admin-bar state you support.
- Record the CSS URLs with the largest unused portions. Coverage reports bytes observed as unused for that load, not a universal deletion list.
Map files to their WordPress owners
Inspect the page source and the Network panel to determine whether each URL came from the active theme, a child theme, or a plugin. WordPress enqueues styles by handle and dependency; the filename alone is not always the handle. Check the enqueue code, browser HTML, or the plugin’s source to find the exact handle before writing a dequeue rule.

Scan template families, not just the home page
- Home page and primary landing pages
- Posts, pages, archives and search results
- WooCommerce shop, product, cart, checkout and account screens
- Forms, galleries, sliders and other feature pages
- Custom post types and block templates
- Mobile and desktop widths, hover/focus states, open menus and dialogs
- Logged-in pages, including the WordPress admin bar
A stylesheet can be unused on one URL and essential on another. Build your rules around those URL and feature boundaries.
Remove a stylesheet with WordPress handles
Dequeue on the requests where it is not needed
WordPress describes wp_dequeue_style() as “Removes a previously enqueued CSS stylesheet.” It acts on a handle that has already been registered or enqueued, so your callback must run after the original enqueue when necessary. Put site-specific code in a child theme or a site-specific plugin so a parent-theme update cannot overwrite it.
<?php
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
if ( ! is_page( 'contact' ) ) {
wp_dequeue_style( 'contact-form-plugin-handle' );
}
}, 100 );
Replace contact-form-plugin-handle with the real handle. The example keeps the form stylesheet on the Contact page and removes it elsewhere. Use the same pattern for a gallery, map, slider or other feature that has a clearly defined URL boundary.
Understand dequeue versus deregister
| API | Effect | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
wp_dequeue_style() |
Stops an already enqueued stylesheet from being printed on the current request. | You want a request-specific unload while leaving the handle available to other code. |
wp_deregister_style() |
Removes a registered stylesheet from WordPress’s style registry. | You intentionally want the handle removed from the registry and understand its dependency implications. |
Dequeue first. Deregister only when registry removal is intended; a dependent stylesheet may expect the handle to remain registered.

Prefer conditional enqueueing for feature CSS
The safest long-term fix is often to stop loading a feature stylesheet globally. Enqueue it only where the feature renders, while retaining the complete file on those pages. This preserves selectors for the feature and reduces transfer and render-blocking work elsewhere.
<?php
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
if ( is_page( 'contact' ) ) {
wp_enqueue_style(
'site-contact',
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/assets/contact.css',
array(),
'1.0'
);
}
} );
wp_enqueue_style() is WordPress’s supported enqueue function and accepts dependency handles. Keep dependencies accurate and avoid moving shared theme CSS into a page-only file unless every selector’s scope is understood.

Automate used-CSS generation with one system
Generated used CSS can reduce manual rules, but it must be maintained. Choose one unused-CSS engine; do not run overlapping implementations together. WP Rocket documents that its Remove Unused CSS feature is disabled when equivalent RapidLoad or Perfmatters functionality is active.
WP Rocket
- The site must be publicly accessible to WP Rocket’s generator and requires a valid WP Rocket license.
- Used CSS is generated asynchronously and applied after processing; WP Rocket recommends preloading for practical coverage.
- Clear used CSS after stylesheet or custom-CSS changes.
- Safelist selectors and files added dynamically, including classes created by scripts or user interactions.
Perfmatters
- Use its Remove Unused CSS feature after disabling duplicate CSS combining or competing unused-CSS features elsewhere.
- Choose inline used CSS for potentially earlier above-the-fold delivery, accepting larger HTML, or a separate file for cacheability on repeat visits.
- Use file and selector exclusions, per-post or per-page exclusions, and global or individual used-CSS clearing when components are missed.
- Coverage in Chrome DevTools can help identify the files and selectors that need exclusions.
| Approach | Strength | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual dequeue | Transparent, precise control by handle and condition. | Requires ongoing mapping and testing as plugins and templates change. |
| Conditional enqueue | Preserves complete feature CSS where it is needed and avoids site-wide loading. | Requires code changes and reliable feature/page detection. |
| Generated used CSS | Automates per-page CSS reduction across many routes. | Generated output can miss dynamic states; it needs safelists, regeneration and cache management. |
| Inline output | Can deliver critical used rules without an extra request. | Increases HTML size and may repeat CSS across pages. |
| Separate used-CSS file | Can be cached on repeat visits. | Introduces an additional file request and still needs regeneration. |
Safelist dynamic and unobserved CSS
Safelist any file or selector that appears after load or only in a state your scan did not exercise. Typical examples include mobile navigation classes, modal-open states, form error styles, hover and focus rules, slider states, responsive breakpoints, WooCommerce notices, logged-in admin-bar offsets and editor-generated block classes. If a generated tool removes one of these, add the relevant file or selector to its exclusions, clear generated CSS and regenerate.

Validate the result before publishing
- Purge page, plugin, CDN and browser caches. Regenerate used CSS when your optimizer provides that action.
- Check mobile and desktop widths, including hover, focus, expanded menus, dialogs, sliders, forms and validation errors.
- Review home, posts, pages, archives, search, WooCommerce flows and custom post types.
- Test both logged-out and logged-in views if their markup differs.
- Reload cold and repeat visits, then rerun Chrome Coverage and your performance audit. Confirm the warning improves without layout shifts, flash of unstyled content or missing components.
- If anything breaks, restore the dequeued stylesheet or add its file/selectors to the optimizer safelist, clear generated output and retest.
Choose the right method
- Use manual dequeue when one plugin file is clearly unnecessary on known URLs and you want code-reviewed behavior.
- Use conditional enqueueing when you control the feature and can identify exactly where it renders.
- Use generated used CSS when many templates need automation and you can provide public URLs, maintain safelists and run regression checks.
- Combine methods carefully: a manual unload can remove a file before a generator analyzes it, so document ownership and test the resulting generated CSS. Never enable two competing unused-CSS engines at once.
