The WordPress logo in your browser tab is the site’s Site Icon, commonly called a favicon. Remove the Site Icon assignment in your WordPress dashboard, save or publish the change, and refresh the site. The correct screen depends on your WordPress version and whether your active theme is a block theme.
Choose the removal method for your site

These are different navigation paths to the same Site Icon setting, not different kinds of favicon. WordPress documents the version change and legacy path in Create a Favicon.
Remove the icon with a block theme
If your dashboard has Appearance > Editor, your active theme is a block theme and the Site Editor provides the Identity controls. WordPress says the Site Editor is available when a block theme is active; see Site Editor.
- Open Appearance > Editor.
- Open Identity.
- Hover over the current Site Icon.
- Click the X that appears to remove it.
- Save the changes.

Remove it in WordPress 6.5 or later
WordPress 6.5 moved the Site Icon setting to Settings > General (sometimes labeled General Settings). Open that screen, clear the selected Site Icon using the removal control displayed there, and save the settings. WordPress’s versioned instructions confirm the new location but do not specify a universal label for that control, so its wording can vary by interface.
If you cannot find the setting under General, check whether your active block theme exposes the Identity section described above. The Site Editor route can present the control separately from the general settings screen.

Use the Customizer in WordPress 4.3–6.4
- Go to Appearance > Customize.
- Open Site Identity.
- In the Site Icon section, select Remove.
- Click Publish.
This is the documented legacy route for WordPress 4.3 through 6.4. The Customizer is theme-dependent; if Appearance > Customize is missing, your active theme may not support it. WordPress explains that availability in its Customizer documentation.
Site Icon versus Site Logo
A Site Icon controls identification images such as the browser-tab icon, bookmarks, and mobile-app contexts. A Site Logo is the logo displayed on site pages through the Site Logo block. They are separate settings.

However, the Site Logo block can be configured to use its image as the Site Icon. If the tab image returns after you remove one setting, inspect the Site Icon assignment associated with the logo. The relationship and controls are documented in Site Logo block.
What removal does—and does not—do
- Removing the setting stops WordPress from assigning that image as the site’s favicon.
- It does not require deleting the image from your Media Library.
- Deleting the media file is a separate action and is not part of the documented removal steps.
Keep the media file if you may want to use it again elsewhere on the site.
Verify the change if the old icon remains
- Confirm that you clicked Save in the Site Editor or General Settings, or Publish in the Customizer.
- Open the public site and refresh the page.
- If the old image still appears, try a private window or another browser to distinguish a previously cached tab icon from a WordPress setting that was not saved.
- Check the Site Icon assignment again, including any Site Logo block configured to provide the icon.
WordPress’s documentation establishes the setting changes, but it does not promise a fixed browser-cache interval. A browser may continue displaying an earlier icon until it refreshes its stored version.

Removal does not require uploading a replacement. If you later add one, WordPress recommends a square image at least 512 pixels on each side. See Create a Favicon and Site Editor Identity for the documented requirements.
