To remove the ?ver= query string from a WordPress asset URL, pass null as the $ver argument when you enqueue the script or stylesheet. This applies to assets whose enqueue calls you control. For assets registered by WordPress, a plugin, or another theme, a site-wide filter may be needed—and should be tested carefully. The version string supports cache busting, so plan how browsers and CDNs will receive file updates after you remove it.
Why WordPress adds ?ver= to asset URLs
WordPress’s enqueue functions accept a version argument, $ver, which can be added to a script or stylesheet URL as a query string. The wp_enqueue_script() reference describes it as a script version added to the URL “for cache busting purposes”; the wp_enqueue_style() reference documents the same purpose for stylesheets.
When $ver is false, WordPress uses the currently installed WordPress version. That is why an asset URL may end in something like ?ver=6.x. Setting the argument to null suppresses the version query string for that enqueue call.
Remove the version from assets you enqueue
Set the fourth argument of wp_enqueue_style() or wp_enqueue_script() to null. For example:

Keep the dependencies and loading choices appropriate to your theme; only the version argument needs to change to remove ?ver=.
Use WordPress’s enqueue functions and hooks rather than replacing them with hard-coded <link> or <script> tags. The Theme Handbook’s asset guidance explains that enqueueing allows WordPress, themes, and plugins to load assets together. Theme front-end assets are commonly added on the wp_enqueue_scripts hook.

When the asset belongs to a plugin, core, or another theme
Changing your own enqueue call only affects the asset registered through that call. It will not change a separate script or stylesheet enqueued by WordPress core, a plugin, or a theme you do not control.
For those URLs, developers sometimes use the script_loader_src and style_loader_src filters to alter generated script and stylesheet URLs. There is no single universally safe filter implementation established by the cited WordPress references, so validate any site-wide code against your WordPress version and the assets and plugins in use. Preserve unrelated query parameters, and do not strip parameters from external resources or dynamic endpoints unless you know they are unnecessary.

Choose an approach based on control and caching

Removing the query string removes that changing URL signal. A browser, proxy, or CDN may continue serving a cached copy after you update the underlying CSS or JavaScript. If reliable cache invalidation matters, retain a developer-controlled asset version or build hash, or use a cache-purge process. This is an implementation choice based on the documented cache-busting purpose of the parameter.
Verify what the change removed
Check the page source and the browser’s network requests after changing the enqueue call or filter. Confirm that the intended asset URL no longer has ?ver=, and test that updated files load as expected. A stylesheet or script URL is only one place where a WordPress version may appear.

The asset query string is separate from the HTML generator meta tag, and removing one does not necessarily remove the other or every version disclosure. The WordPress.org listing for Remove WordPress Version – Hide Generator Meta Tag treats the generator tag and CSS/JS URL versions as separate settings and notes that some script-module URLs may still retain a version string. The listing describes a plugin option for users who prefer an admin interface; check its current compatibility and test the rendered output before relying on it.

Concealing a version string does not patch WordPress, a theme, or a plugin. The plugin listing states: “Hiding the version will not patch anything, so keep WordPress updated regardless.” Apply updates and address vulnerabilities directly rather than treating URL cleanup as a security measure.
