To remove dates from WordPress post URLs, go to Settings → Permalinks, select Post name, and click Save Changes. A URL such as /2026/01/01/post-title will then use a date-free form such as /post-title. On an established site, configure redirects from the old URLs before or immediately after changing the structure.
What changing the permalink structure does
WordPress stores the URL pattern for individual posts as a permalink structure. The setting applies to newly published posts and previously published posts that use the site’s structure. Removing the date changes those post URLs; it does not automatically remove WordPress date archive pages.
For example, a dated permalink can change from https://example.com/2026/01/01/post-title/ to https://example.com/post-title/. The exact trailing-slash behavior and domain depend on your site’s existing configuration.
Before you change anything
- Record the current structure, including whether it contains
%year%,%monthnum%,%day%, a category, or another prefix. - List or export important existing post URLs, especially pages receiving traffic, backlinks, bookmarks, or internal links.
- Make sure your desired post slugs are unique and manageable. Removing dates can create conflicts when different posts used the same title or slug in different years.
- Plan redirects for old URLs. WordPress.com warns that old post links may not redirect automatically after a structure change.
Remove dates with the Post name setting
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator dashboard.
- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Select Post name under the common permalink settings.
- Click Save Changes. WordPress applies the new rewrite structure after the settings are saved.
- Open a published post in a private browser window or while logged out and confirm that its address uses the new date-free pattern.
Post name is the simplest built-in option when you want URLs containing the post slug and no date components.

Use a custom date-free structure
A custom structure is useful when you need to retain another identifier, such as a category, while excluding the date. In the Custom Structure field, include %postname% or %post_id% and omit the date tags.

Do not leave the custom structure without a post-identifying tag. WordPress documentation lists structure tags for identifying content; a date-free pattern should contain at least %postname% or %post_id%.

Redirect old dated URLs
Changing the setting does not guarantee that every old address will redirect to its corresponding new address. Without redirects, visitors and search engines following a dated link may encounter a 404 page, and external links can stop reaching the post.
Recommended redirect workflow
- Keep a mapping of each old dated URL to its new URL.
- Create permanent redirects (HTTP 301) from the old address to the matching new address. On WordPress.com, its support guidance recommends using a redirection plugin for this situation; on self-hosted sites, use a redirect method supported by your installation and host.
- Redirect directly to the final URL rather than through several intermediate addresses.
- Test representative URLs from different years, categories, and post types. Confirm that each reaches the intended post and does not create a loop or an unmatched redirect.
- Update internal links, XML sitemaps, canonical references, and campaign links that still contain the dated format.
Redirects should preserve the specific post relationship: an old URL for one article should go to that article’s new URL, not merely to the home page or a generic archive.

Post permalinks and date archives are different
Removing %year%, %monthnum%, and %day% from a post structure changes individual post addresses. WordPress rewrite handling also supports date archive URLs, such as year or month archive pages. Those archives are a separate concern, so a date-free post URL does not by itself delete or disable date archives.
Post name versus a custom structure

Choose the pattern that fits your site’s existing URL conventions and editorial workflow. WordPress’s documentation describes the available tags but does not establish a universal ranking advantage for either choice.

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress differences
On WordPress.com, the permalink-structure feature is available on plugin-enabled Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce plans, according to WordPress.com’s support guidance reviewed August 11, 2026. The dashboard labels and available controls can vary by plan.
For self-hosted WordPress.org sites, an administrator normally changes the setting at Settings → Permalinks. Your WordPress version, web server, caching layer, security rules, and hosting configuration can affect rewrite behavior, so verify the result on the live domain and consult your host if saving the setting does not change URLs.

Troubleshoot common problems
The old URL shows a 404 error
Create a direct 301 redirect from that exact dated URL to the new post URL, then clear any page or server cache and test again. Check that the post still exists and that the destination slug is correct.
Some posts go to the wrong content
Look for duplicate slugs or a custom structure that includes a category or identifier. Give conflicting posts distinct slugs, update the redirect map, and retest each affected URL.
The setting saves but URLs do not change
Verify that you selected Post name or entered a custom structure containing %postname% or %post_id%, clicked Save Changes, and are viewing the public URL rather than a cached copy. Persistent rewrite or server errors require hosting-specific investigation.
Redirects form a loop or chain
Inspect every rule affecting the old and new paths. Remove overlapping rules so the dated URL points directly to one final date-free URL, and purge caches before retesting.
Will removing dates improve SEO?
The official WordPress guidance for this change explains how to modify permalinks and warns about old-link redirects; it does not establish a quantified ranking improvement from removing dates. Treat the change as a URL-architecture decision. If you proceed, preserve access to existing links with accurate redirects and test the migration rather than assuming a search benefit.
