To prevent silence between podcast episodes on a YouTube Live stream, make the playback source feeding your encoder play the episodes continuously. In OBS, use a Media Source with Loop for one repeating file, or a VLC Video source with an ordered playlist and Loop Playlist for multiple episodes. Test the boundaries between files before going live: OBS documents looping and playlist controls, but does not promise gapless or crossfaded transitions.
Choose the playback setup that matches your episode queue
The transition happens in the playback source that feeds the encoder—not on the YouTube watch page. Set up continuous playback at the source, then verify that the audio output has the transitions you want.

These controls are documented in the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide. It lists common audio formats supported by Media Source, including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, along with common video formats.

- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the podcast stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source. Name it, then select OK.
- In the source properties, choose the local episode file.
- Turn on Loop if the episode should restart automatically after playback completes.
- Confirm that the source is audible in the OBS audio mixer, then listen through the file’s ending and restart before relying on it live.
OBS documents Loop as replaying the media file after it finishes. If you want one episode followed by another different episode, use a playlist source instead of expecting a single-file loop to advance through a queue.

Set up an ordered playlist of episodes
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS notes that VLC Video appears only when VLC is installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene, then choose + in the Sources dock and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the podcast files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve that order.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart from the beginning after the last item. OBS documents this option as on by default, but check the setting rather than assuming it is enabled.
- Apply the settings and monitor the source through at least one complete episode boundary. Repeat this check for any files with unusually long endings, silence, or different audio levels.
Test the transitions before starting the live broadcast
Looping prevents playback from stopping at the end of a file or playlist, but it does not necessarily remove silence already present in the recordings or guarantee a seamless join between separate files. The OBS documentation describes playback and playlist controls, not gapless playback or crossfades.
- Listen to the end of one episode and the start of the next in the output you intend to stream.
- If a pause occurs, inspect the media files and playback chain first. Silence may be recorded at the end of one file or the beginning of the next.
- Do not assume that changing YouTube’s ingestion protocol will fix a pause created by the playlist source.
- Make another test after changing the episode order or replacing a file; the transition depends on the actual media sequence.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. YouTube says scheduling can give viewers a chance to see the upcoming stream and set a reminder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream details, or use the connection method presented in your OBS and YouTube setup.
- Start streaming from OBS, then confirm in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the broadcast before you direct viewers to it.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow in its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder help page. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your continuous run may exceed 12 hours, plan how you will handle stream segmentation and whether you need a replay; do not assume the entire longer run will be saved as one automatic archive.

Will HLS or different stream settings remove the silence?
Not if the pause is between files in the playback source. HLS is an optional ingestion protocol for compatible encoders, with delivery requirements such as TS segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS requests. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Those are delivery details; they do not establish that HLS removes a pause in the media playlist.
