A scratch cut into a tablet’s glass cannot be polished or buffed out safely at home. Home methods that claim to remove one usually strip the screen’s oil-repelling coating or add more marks. What you can do is confirm the mark is really a scratch, clean the screen gently, protect it from the next mark, and take confirmed damage to the manufacturer’s service channel.
Step one: confirm whether it is a scratch or residue
Many marks that look like scratches are smudges, oil, or dried film on the surface. Clean those first, then judge what remains.
- Residue: the mark disappears after a gentle wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. No further action is needed.
- Possible surface damage: the mark stays visible after a gentle wipe, especially when you look at the screen at an angle under normal room light. Treat it as possible damage to the glass or its coating.
- Possible protector damage: if you have a screen protector, the mark may be in the film rather than the glass. Check whether it lifts or shifts with the film before assuming the glass is marked.
Clean gently and stop there
Apple’s current support guidance for iPad describes the screen as having an oleophobic coating and recommends wiping it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Use that same approach on any tablet, following your manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your model.

- Wipe the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth using light pressure.
- Look at the screen again in normal room light, from more than one angle.
- If the mark is gone, you are finished. If it remains, stop cleaning and move to the damage section below. Do not switch to a stronger product.
Why abrasives make the problem worse
Apple’s guidance states that rubbing the screen with an abrasive material will further diminish the oil-repelling coating and might scratch the screen (Apple Support, “How to clean your Apple products”, accessed 7 October 2026). The same reasoning applies to the common household remedies people try for scratches. Do not use toothpaste, baking soda, polishing compounds, or abrasive pads. None of these is a documented fix for a tablet scratch, and each can remove coating or leave a hazy patch on the glass.

What a screen protector can and cannot do
A screen protector is a preventive accessory. It can take the next scratch, but it does not repair one already in the glass, and it will not restore the display’s original clarity.
- Buy by exact model. Protectors are sized and cut for specific tablets. A protector for a different model may not align with the camera, sensors, or edges.
- Use approved accessories. Samsung’s guidance cautions against unapproved protectors because they may affect sensors (Samsung Philippines Support, “What to do if there are scratches, dents or cracks on your Galaxy device”, last updated 23 October 2023).
- Do not peel off an unknown film. If a factory-installed film is present, check the maker’s model-specific instructions first. Samsung’s same guidance cautions against removing or installing films on Galaxy devices.
- Follow the model’s own steps. Samsung’s installation guidance for the Galaxy Tab S9 and S9 FE describes a specific protector kit and alignment process (Samsung Service Korea, Galaxy Tab S9/S9 FE protector installation guidance, dated 3 January 2024). Those steps apply to those models only, not to other tablets.
When the mark is damage that needs service
If the scratch stays visible after gentle cleaning, or if the glass is cracked or affects use, contact the manufacturer’s service channel for your exact model and region. For Galaxy devices, Samsung’s guidance recommends an authorized service center or a repair booking for scratches, dents, or cracks. It also notes that service may not be covered and that additional charges may apply depending on the type of damage (Samsung Philippines Support).

Before visiting a service provider, gather the model number, the purchase date, and any warranty or insurance paperwork you have. Those details decide which repair path applies.

The manufacturer guidance cited here does not publish repair prices, coverage rules, or figures on how often tablet screens scratch. Those depend on your model, country, and warranty terms, so check them directly with the manufacturer.
