For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, start with OneDrive cloud icon → Help & Settings → Settings → Account → Unlink this PC → Unlink account. Microsoft says unlinking stops synchronization without deleting your OneDrive data; files remain available at OneDrive.com. See Microsoft’s instructions.
Choose the result you actually want
| Goal | Recommended method | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Stop syncing this computer | Unlink this PC | Sync stops; cloud files remain online. |
| Hide the visible folder but keep OneDrive installed | Hide the folder or unlink the account | Explorer visibility changes; the client may remain installed. |
| Remove the desktop client | Uninstall OneDrive | The app is removed; cloud files remain accessible online. |
| Remove a stale or duplicate account entry | Disconnect the old account, then clean its Explorer namespace | Orphaned sidebar registration is removed. |
| Disable OneDrive for all users | Group Policy or MDM | OneDrive storage and synchronization are disabled by policy. |
| Keep OneDrive working but remove only its icon | Registry namespace change | Explorer presentation changes; sync can continue. |
Method 1: Unlink OneDrive from this PC
This is the least destructive choice when you want to stop syncing or remove the active integration while preserving your cloud data.
- Select the OneDrive cloud in the notification area. If it is hidden, select the notification-area up arrow.
- Select Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Confirm with Unlink account.
Unlinking stops synchronization and disconnects that account from the computer. Microsoft states that it does not delete OneDrive files or data; you can still sign in at OneDrive.com. Locally synchronized files generally remain on the PC, while online-only files remain in the cloud. Do not manually delete files from a still-linked OneDrive folder: synchronized deletions can propagate to the cloud and other devices.
Close and reopen File Explorer after unlinking. If the item is still shown, restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager or restart Windows. An orphaned namespace entry may need the cleanup steps below.

Method 2: Hide OneDrive without uninstalling it
Use this when you want a reversible visual change and may use OneDrive again.
- Open File Explorer and right-click OneDrive.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, select Hidden under Attributes, then apply the change.
- Open the OneDrive menu in the notification area and select Quit OneDrive.
Microsoft documents this as a hiding method. It does not unlink the account, remove the application, or guarantee that every stale or duplicate namespace entry disappears. OneDrive can also be relaunched later.
Method 3: Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive
Uninstall when you do not want the desktop client or background synchronization on this computer.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps on current Windows 11, or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive, open its menu, and select Uninstall.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
Microsoft says uninstalling does not delete your cloud files; they remain available through OneDrive.com. Existing local files generally remain, but do not delete a local OneDrive folder until you have checked its sync state and confirmed that important files are safely stored online. Some Windows editions include OneDrive as an integrated component and may not offer a normal uninstall; in that case, unlinking, hiding, or policy control is the practical alternative. Uninstalling also may not remove an orphaned Explorer registration.

Refresh Explorer first
Close every File Explorer window and reopen it. If necessary, open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart. A full Windows restart is another simple refresh; neither step is guaranteed to remove an orphaned registration.
Disconnect an obsolete work or school account
This is common when the item is named OneDrive – Organization, the former employer or school account no longer exists, two entries appear, or selecting the item reports “Location is not available.”

Check both personal and organizational OneDrive accounts before removing anything. Microsoft Q&A discusses this cause and cleanup at this support thread.
Advanced: remove only the identified namespace entry
Use Registry Editor only after unlinking or uninstalling, and only if the stale item remains. Microsoft Q&A provides the following community-supported approach, not a primary consumer removal procedure:
- Press Win + R, enter
regedit.exe, and press Enter. - Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerDesktopNameSpace. - Select subkeys one at a time and inspect the displayed value to identify the OneDrive entry.
- Export the identified key as a backup (or create a restore point).
- Delete only that identified OneDrive subkey; never delete the entire
NameSpacekey or unrelated CLSIDs. - Restart Explorer or Windows.
For a standard personal OneDrive registration, Microsoft Q&A commonly references HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6} and the value System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree set to 0. Work/school and duplicate registrations can use different entries. See the namespace guidance and the related example. This changes Explorer’s presentation; it does not necessarily unlink OneDrive, stop sync, uninstall the app, or delete cloud data. Updates, sign-ins, reinstallations, or management policy can recreate it.

Disable OneDrive with Group Policy
Use centralized policy on supported Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions—not Windows Home. Microsoft lists support for Windows 10 version 1703 and later and Windows 11 version 21H2 and later for the documented setting.
Local Group Policy path
- Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → OneDrive.
- Open Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage, set it to Enabled, and apply.
- Restart Windows or allow policy processing to complete.
Microsoft documents this policy at Policy CSP – System. Its registry mapping is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsOneDrive with DisableFileSyncNGSC = 1. Enabling it prevents OneDrive file synchronization, removes OneDrive from the File Explorer navigation pane, and blocks features that use OneDrive file storage, including some camera-roll behavior.
On managed PCs, Group Policy or MDM may reapply the setting after restart, sign-in, or periodic processing. Manually changing the resulting registry value may therefore not persist. Microsoft explains this policy behavior in OneDrive won’t start; ask your administrator to change the controlling policy.

What each method does to files
| Method | Cloud files | Local files | Sync status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlink this PC | Remain online | Usually remain | Stops |
| Hide folder | Unchanged | Unchanged | May continue until OneDrive is quit or unlinked |
| Uninstall OneDrive | Remain online | Existing files generally remain | Desktop client removed |
| Registry hide | Unchanged | Unchanged | Usually continues |
| Group Policy disablement | Remain in the cloud | Handle existing content carefully | Disabled by policy |
Removing a navigation shortcut is not the same as deleting the OneDrive folder. File deletion while synchronization is active can affect cloud copies and other synchronized devices.
Common problems and recovery
No OneDrive cloud icon
Search Start for OneDrive and launch it if installed. If it is not installed or cannot start, treat the Explorer item as a possible stale registration and use the account and namespace steps above.
Two OneDrive entries
Personal and business accounts can register separate entries. Identify each displayed name before deleting a namespace key; Microsoft Q&A covers duplicate entries at this example.
The entry returns
Reinstalling OneDrive, signing in again, Windows updates, or policy refresh can recreate the registration. On an organization-managed computer, contact the administrator instead of repeatedly editing the registry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRestore OneDrive later
Launch or reinstall OneDrive, sign in, and choose the folders to sync. To reverse a registry cleanup, import the exported key. To reverse policy control, have the administrator set Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage to Not configured or Disabled, subject to organizational rules.
The Bottom Line
Unlink OneDrive first: it stops synchronization without deleting cloud data. Hide or uninstall the client only when that matches your goal; reserve registry edits for stale entries and Group Policy for supported, managed Windows editions.
