For an episode already published on YouTube, trim its beginning and end in YouTube Studio’s Editor; you can keep the existing URL without uploading the video again. For a local audio master, use Audacity’s Trim Audio to remove only the opening and ending. Use Truncate Silence only when you want to shorten quiet gaps throughout the episode, and review the result for clipped speech or unnatural pauses.

Choose the method that fits your episode

  • Already published, and only the start or end needs trimming: use YouTube Studio’s Editor. This changes the existing video rather than requiring a new upload.
  • Editing a local audio file: use Audacity’s Trim Audio to keep the section you want.
  • Shortening gaps throughout the episode: use Audacity’s Truncate Silence, or consider Descript’s silence-removal tool. These detect low-volume or silent sections, so inspect the edits carefully.
  • Need to replace the media file on an existing YouTube upload: YouTube does not replace a video in place. A new upload receives a new URL.

Trim the beginning and end of a published YouTube episode

YouTube’s built-in trim tool can remove the opening and ending of an existing video without re-uploading it. YouTube says the video’s URL, views, and comments remain. The tool applies to videos shorter than six hours, and save restrictions may affect unedited videos with more than 100,000 views outside the YouTube Partner Program. Check YouTube’s current trim eligibility and instructions before saving.

  1. On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
  2. Click the episode’s title or thumbnail, then select Editor.
  3. Choose Trim & cut. In the endpoint trim tool, drag the sides of the blue selection box until it covers the content you want to keep. Material outside the selection is removed.
  4. Preview the opening and ending. Check that the first words and final sounds are intact, then save.

Saving is consequential: YouTube says the former “Revert to original” option has not been available for saved Studio Editor changes since June 2025. Keep a copy of the source before editing, then inspect the published result.

Trim a local audio master in Audacity

For an audio file on your computer, select the episode section to retain and trim away everything outside it. This is the direct choice when silence is only at the start or end.

  1. Open the audio file in Audacity. If it is an important master, save a separate project copy first.
  2. Select the part to keep, beginning just after the unwanted intro silence and ending just before the unwanted tail. Zoom in or enter precise selection times if needed.
  3. Choose Edit → Remove Special → Trim Audio. The shortcut is Ctrl+T on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+T on macOS.
  4. Listen to the opening and ending. In the project, you can drag the edges back out to recover hidden material before final export.
  5. Choose File → Export Audio and export in a suitable format, such as MP3 or WAV.

Trim Audio keeps the selected region in the project and hides the material outside it; the exported file contains the remaining visible audio. See Audacity’s Trim Audio instructions for details.

Shorten quiet gaps throughout an episode

If pauses occur throughout the recording, Audacity’s Effect → Special → Truncate Silence can detect audio below a chosen decibel threshold for at least a chosen minimum duration. Depending on the selected mode, it shortens detected silences to a fixed duration or compresses them proportionally. It is level-based, not a judgment of what counts as an unnecessary pause: quiet speech or a deliberate beat may also meet the settings.

  1. Open the project and select the audio to process.
  2. Choose Effect → Special → Truncate Silence.
  3. Set the threshold and minimum duration conservatively. Choose whether detected sections should be shortened to a fixed duration or compressed proportionally.
  4. Preview and listen through the result, especially around quiet speech, breaths, and transitions. Adjust the settings if words are clipped or the pacing feels unnatural.

With multiple tracks, take care to preserve synchronization. Audacity’s default processes silence where it occurs across all selected tracks at the same time; processing tracks independently can desynchronize them. The Audacity manual explains the effect’s settings and multitrack behavior.

Optional: use Descript to detect silence

Descript’s July 29, 2026 release notes say version 3.7 added a Remove Silence function with an adjustable threshold. Its instructions recommend reviewing detected edits and previewing the result; cuts can be restored in the project. This is an optional route for creators who prefer transcript-oriented audio and video editing, not a requirement. See the Descript 3.7 release notes and Silence Remover instructions.

Keep the YouTube URL—or upload a new version?

If retaining the current URL matters, trim the existing upload in YouTube Studio. YouTube does not let you replace the uploaded video file in place; a separately rendered replacement must be uploaded as a new video, which gets a new URL. Consider this before exporting a cleaned-up master over an existing episode. See YouTube’s guidance on replacing or deleting a video.

A YouTube podcast episode is a video in a podcast playlist; YouTube’s podcast workflow does not turn an MP3 file directly into a podcast episode. If you are preparing an audio-only master, you will need to publish it as a video for that YouTube podcast workflow. See YouTube’s podcast setup instructions.

Common problems and fixes

  • The opening or ending still contains part of the silence: return to the trim boundary and adjust it while previewing. Zoom in for a more precise selection on a local file.
  • A word, breath, or musical fade was cut: move the boundary outward or undo the local edit in the Audacity project. With automatic truncation, raise the threshold’s conservatism or change the minimum-duration setting, then preview again.
  • Quiet speech or intentional pauses are shortened: Truncate Silence treats low-level audio that meets its threshold and duration as silence. Use less aggressive settings, or trim only the endpoints manually.
  • Tracks no longer line up: avoid processing multitrack audio independently. Audacity’s default simultaneous processing helps preserve alignment across selected tracks.
  • You expected to undo a saved YouTube trim: YouTube says the former “Revert to original” feature is unavailable for saved Editor changes since June 2025. Keep the source file before editing.
  • You need to keep the URL but replace the entire rendered file: YouTube does not support in-place video replacement. Trim the existing upload if that is sufficient; a new upload gets a new URL.
