Dismiss the cookie banner before you capture the page. For a one-off splash screenshot, use a private browser window, make an explicit accept, reject, or close choice, wait for the banner and dimming layer to disappear, and then capture. For repeatable jobs, automate that interaction or use a consent-blocking option and tested selectors. If the banner is already baked into an image, crop only when the edge can be removed honestly; otherwise recapture from a clean browser state.
Choose the right removal method
“Removing” a cookie banner can mean two different things: recording a real consent decision, or merely hiding pixels so the page looks clean. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. A visual-regression run may need a stable, unobstructed render; compliance evidence may need the untouched page and proof that the consent control worked.

Keep an unfiltered original whenever the screenshot may be used as QA evidence, a legal or compliance record, or a support artifact. A clean derivative can then be shared without losing the original state.
One-off capture in a browser
- Start a private session. Open the URL in an incognito or private window. Existing consent cookies can make a normal window appear clean even though a first-time visitor would see a banner.
- Wait for the first-visit state. Some consent managers render after JavaScript settles, after a short delay, or only after scrolling or another interaction. Do not capture immediately on first paint.
- Inspect the complete widget. Use DevTools to identify the outer banner wrapper, not just a text node or button. Note any separate backdrop or dark filter that dims the page.
- Make an explicit choice. Click the site’s accept, reject, or close control. A real choice is different from deleting the element with DevTools. If the site offers only “manage preferences,” complete the smallest choice that matches your test policy.
- Wait for removal. Confirm that both the panel and its dimming layer are gone, and that the page is no longer prevented from scrolling or receiving clicks.
- Capture and preserve. Take the splash screenshot only after the layout settles. Save the original, unfiltered capture separately if the image may be evidence.
For a banner that appears only after an interaction, reproduce that interaction before dismissal. Grafana k6’s guidance follows the same principle: trigger the banner deliberately, dismiss it early, and then continue the later steps.
Automate dismissal for repeatable screenshots
Try a built-in consent blocker first
Several screenshot services expose a consent-blocking switch. Browserless documents blockConsentModals=true for its screenshot endpoint. Allscreenshots documents cookie-banner blocking as enabled by default and provides blockCookieBanners: false when an unfiltered render is required. These options reduce per-site scripting, but they are not proof that every consent manager was handled. Verify one representative page from each domain.
Use a selector and click when automation misses
When a built-in blocker does not recognize a site, add a narrow, tested selector for the actual control or wrapper. Yodeck recommends trying its automatic option first; its documented manual template is pause(4) click("""SELECTOR"""). Replace the placeholder with a selector for the consent action, then wait for the overlay to vanish before taking the screenshot.
For visual regression, Sitepager’s approach is to put the banner selector in Dynamic Content Selectors, test one page, and only then scale the scan. Target the parent wrapper rather than a child label. If the page remains grey, add the backdrop as a second selector; one documented example uses #onetrust-banner-sdk, .onetrust-pc-dark-filter.
Wait for a settled page
Run the consent logic after a page-settling condition such as network idle, a known content selector, or a bounded delay. Network idle alone is not sufficient on sites with long-polling or advertising requests, so combine it with a maximum wait and a positive check that the banner is absent.

A CSS rule that sets display:none, a screenshot-service blocker, or a hidden selector changes the pixels but does not create a consent record. If your purpose includes testing the accept or reject button, run a separate, narrow interaction test that verifies the click, the resulting cookie or storage value, and the disappearance of the modal.
Iframe, shadow DOM, and overlay edge cases
Cross-origin iframes
Consent platforms often place their controls in an iframe. A top-level document.querySelector or page-level click can therefore miss the button. Locate the frame first, then use a frame-aware locator and identify the control by its accessible role or label. Do not assume that removing an iframe element from the parent document changes the frame’s internal state.

Shadow DOM
Some widgets render inside an open or closed shadow root. Open roots can be traversed with shadow-aware locators; closed roots generally require the vendor’s supported API or a visual blocker. Record which path you used because a selector that works in one implementation may fail after a consent-platform update.
Backdrop left behind
The panel and its backdrop are frequently separate nodes. If the page content is visible but greyed out, inspect for a fixed overlay with a high z-index and include that selector in the cleanup. Also check that the overlay is not intentionally part of the page’s splash design.

Late or interaction-triggered banners
Scroll-triggered and delayed banners can appear after an apparently successful capture. Exercise the interaction that causes them, wait through the configured delay, and perform the dismissal before the final screenshot. For a long page, test both the top and a scrolled position if your capture process changes scroll state.
When the screenshot already contains the banner
Crop only an expendable edge
If the banner occupies a bottom or side strip and cropping it does not remove meaningful page content, crop the image. State that the image was cropped. Do not crop away a banner that overlaps the subject you are documenting.
Retouch only with disclosure
Clone, heal, or content-aware tools can remove visible pixels, but they can also invent interface text or layout. Label the result as edited and retain the untouched source. For documentation, QA evidence, or legal/compliance records, a fresh capture from a clean browser state is preferable.

Troubleshooting checklist
- The banner is still visible: wait for delayed rendering, trigger the required scroll or click, and target the outer wrapper instead of a child element.
- The page is still grey: locate and remove the separate backdrop or dark-filter selector.
- The click does nothing: check whether the control is inside an iframe or shadow root and switch to a frame- or shadow-aware locator.
- The screenshot is clean but consent was not recorded: you hid pixels rather than performing a real interaction; run a separate accept/reject test.
- The banner returns on every run: use a deliberate private-session policy, persist the intended consent state where appropriate, or accept that first-visit screenshots should include the banner.
- The result changes between runs: standardize viewport, device scale, timezone, geolocation, cookies, user agent, wait condition, and resource blocking. Keep an original capture for comparison.
- A blocker removes page content: narrow the selector, test on one URL, and verify that the selected wrapper is the consent widget rather than a similarly named application component.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
For a handful of pages, private-browser dismissal is usually fastest to inspect and easiest to explain. At scale, automation removes manual work but introduces maintenance: consent vendors change markup, overlays, iframe boundaries, and timing. A built-in blocker is cheaper to maintain than per-domain selectors, while a tested selector gives more control over unusual implementations.

Use bounded waits rather than an unlimited network-idle condition, and capture one page from each template before expanding a job. Preserve both the filtered result and, where evidence matters, the unfiltered original.
